IMHO, it depends on the project and depends on the engine.

A large journal 327 (’68 & ‘69) is a very strong motor and getting quite rare.
If you have one, unmolested, keep it!
If you have only a 327 block, you can also blend a 350 crank, etc to gain extra torque.

The other years of 327 were kind of an upgraded 307. Nice choices for originality but if I had something outside
the ’68-69 years and did not care if it was stock, I’d choose the 350 for the extra cubes and it’s great value.
The 350’s were also widely available in a four bolt main plus rebuild on them is usually cheaper than other 8 cyl engines.

I have found that you can buy a NEW GM 350 for close to or less than the cost of a total rebuild on an older engine.

I love the 350 but I have got my first 327 running and got on it the other day and think its going to be a screamer. The 327 is a rpm motor, the 350 has been around for forever for a reason, its a good all around motor.

I'd go with the 327 just for the cool factor if you already have a good running one. If not, I'd go with a tree fiddy.

Had several 327s over the years, still have one in a chevelle. A little faster revving and quicker than a 350. Rebuild parts for a 350 are cheaper. If more power is wanted there is no substitute for cubic inches.

Not trying to be rude, but what's the issue? What are your goals? More power? Cooler sound? A little bit of everything? There has to be a reason that you're hung up.

327's properly built will spin to the moon and nothing sounds better that a SBC at 8000 RPM. I'm sure someone will come up with some type of argument concerning stroke options or something but there's one big fat golden rule when it comes to power. THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT. I'm guessing you're on a budget so if you are even remotely concerned about power it would be stupid not to go with the 350. You would spend quite a bit more to get a 327 to perform equally.

If you pick the 327 strictly for the cool factor I think it would be a bit of a waste. You would have to correct people all day long... it would look like a typical 350.

I have a 327 in my 'Vette. The ONLY reason it's still in there is the fact that its the original motor. If that thing pops tomorrow I'd be doing the same LSx swap that my truck is about to go through.

Once again I'm not trying to be rude or offensive, just frank. And it's late. And I'm tired. Jerry Springer's on........ damn triangles.

If you have a small window 67 short wide that originaly had a 327 and you want to do a correct restore use a 327.

If you have a fairly generic truck; bear in mind that these trucks are massive vehicles and mass requires torque. Gear ratios can trade down HP for torque, but then what's the point of a high reving engine if you need to dial in a lot of mechanical advantage to get moving from a dead stop? Any time you have to add aparatus to get the power into a usefull band you are adding friction so, ultimetely, apples to apples, the longer moment arm always wins in a torque war.

This actually argues for using 400s and strokers (or just cutting to the chase and putting big blocks in) but the savings inherant in using the most common small block engine means that the discussion between a 350 and a 427 is rarely going to actually be apples to apples when finances are considered.

or.... to cut to the quick ...

If you have a compelling reason to use a 327 it is a good motor and certainly an appropriate choice for a small pickup, but without some real compelling argument for the 327 I would go with the 350 in a heart beat.

It`s hard to answer such a vague question.Both?It really depends.They run very differently.I`ll never turn down a 327.i prefer the 327 over a 350 for certain applications.I have a`7i truck 350 that I was going to build for my`67 GMC project.Then,I saw a`68 327 for sale and bought that to rebuild for the truck.I want that fast revvin`hard working mouse in my light little shortbed.I`m also into getting more from less.That`s just the mold I came from.I guess I like disproving the bigger is better myth and have a thing for underdogs.

Actually,"no replacement for displacement" is a false statement,IMO.Sure,the bigger you go the more power you can make.But,I`ve seen smaller motors put out more power than larger motors and I`ve seen smaller motors whoop up on bigger motors.My friend`s 383 powered `70 Monte Carlo whips this other guy`s 454 powered one every time.the same holds true for a 327 vs a 350.
My wrecker has a 327 in it and it`s a`71.It should have a 350 and I`d love to put a hungus beast motor in that,just because of what it is...a tug boat.But the 327 does the job because the truck has 5.13 gears.A 6 cyl. could pull with those gears.The gears help the 327 be in it`s powerband and perform as well as a 350.

My first V8 ever was a 327, it was the engine I learned on. Virtually square bore and stroke, a thing of beauty. I would go with the 327 just because most every one else goes with 350's. And I would get a set of 327 Emblems off of a period correct Chevy and mount them on the fenders with pride!

A large journal 327 and 350 have the same block just differnet cranks. So essentially if you put a 350 crank in it your building a 350. Just an FYI in case anyone was wondering. You can also do Vise versa. Put a large journal 327 crank in a 350 and make it a 327. Oh and a 307 crank is the same a s a large journal 327 crank just a 283 bore.

That's how I built my 327. I used a 350 block with a 307 crank. The crank had to be rebalanced though. It was initially set up for 307 pistons which are a good bit lighter than the 4 inch bore 327 pistons are. The machine shop did it no problem though.

my 68 has the original 327, if it goes south then I will put it on the shelf and run a 350 crate engine. Of course I will paint it orange and put a 327 sticker just so it looks a little more stock in my truck! shhh, don't tell
