Not the way I had intended to start a build thread. I bought a 1972 2wd Blazer off of Craigs list in Ia. Luv and I ran up and got it yesterday and brought it to my place in Tennessee. The first 7 hours of our trip was like driving in a car wash. The rest of the trip was light to heavy rain. So no pics....yet. Not much checking things out......yet. But one thing is for sure, it is sitting on 8 lug wheels all around and it has big rear brake drums. The housing itself is more rounded than a 12 bolt and looks like a 3/4 ton.. Did they build a factory 3/4 ton 2wd Blazer in 1972? Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

Not sure about the 8 lug stuff - when a truck is almost 40 years old - almost anything can happen along the way I guess -

I saw what appeared to be a 3/4 ton pickup with a diff (with 8 lugs) that had that huge round center like you describe. This truck had 8 lugs front and back ... but was sitting on a trailing arm/coil spring rear suspension. So go figure. Id put this question to Wes from Classic Heartbeat.

Does it look like this (10 bolt Eaton - HO52 or HO72)? Very expensive for rebuilding and brake work...if it were me - I would swap it out.

The truck left the factory as a 5 lug 1/2 ton blazer. (SPID) How and when the hevey duty stuff got put in is not known. Here are some pics of the old girl, kind of a get to know her.

Craig (Luv) found it on the St. Louis Mo. craigslist. He posted it on the Tn. board where I saw it and called on it. All I asked was if it had a title and if I hooked my winch to the front would all of it make it on the trailer. He answered yes to both and I said I'll take, Hell I didn't even try to beat him down on price.

This truck started out in South Carolina and was bought and brought to Columbia, Mo. The guy I bought it from In Ia bought it in Columbia Mo and brought it home to build it. He lost his job and was forced to start selling toys and that is where I got in the picture.

My plans.........well let's say they are already shot. I thought I was getting a 5 lug 1/2 ton and all I would need to do is get the bodywork done and drop a engine and transmission in it and ride. Now I have to find out about all this 3/4 or 1 ton running gear and what it is out of. Send me your number as I may need to ask you for advise about it all. All I can say is it's going to be a wild ride.

EDIT: After some thought I will be taking the front sup and 5 lug rear end out from under a 71 long bed truck that I bought for the engine and trans and a good cab with a good Tn, title. Problem solved with nothing more than labor involved.

Congrats Ron. I'd drop it to the ground with air ride and throw in a 5.9 Cummins with a big turbo. Yep, it'd be different. With the heavy running gear maybe someone built it for towing. Who knows, lol.

I ain't into diesels or air ride so sorry not for me. What has me wondering is the front tires are 17.5's and the power steering is a ram setup. That leads me to believe that it is off of something older. The rears are 16.5's. I have a 72 camper special 3/4 ton that has the same rear and wheels on it. So not worried there.

To shift gears I have a all new 6 lug setup with disc brakes, 2 1/2" drop spindles and 4"drop springs on the rear and a set of 20's that just need to be swapped from one frame to the other.(kind of what I'm leaning toward at the moment)

I also have it in 5 lug. To many choices and I like them all. Will just have to weigh it all out and make a choice then go for it. Stay tuned........

Always glad to see these old blazers saved, and put back on the road.
