Anyone drag a 72 C20?? Setup help

I have a 72 C20 project truck. It is a solid, rust free one owner truck. I yanked the stock 350, and had a 454 bored .30 over, 280 comp cam with valve work done for clearance etc... on the oval port 781 heads. I'm running a rebuilt 850 double pumper, with a Performer intake. I have large tube headers with 3" duals running through flowmaster 40's. It has the Granny tranny in for another week or too, and I am installing a th400 with a 2800-3200 stall. I have the stock Dana rearend with 4:11's. It is the leafer, not coil spring rear, however I do have a full coil spring 3/4 ton chasis as well, but I think the leaf will be better with a Caltracks system installed. (traction bars). The front is lower already with the BBC, but I need to install better springs up front and shocks. I want to put the ranchero 9000 adjustables in the back. I removed a bunch of load springs, and am in the process of notching the bed, and flipping the axle to lower the rear more. There....Let me know what else would be a good idea for making this a good bracket racer! but yet want it streetable too. Thanks guys!

Sounds to me like you alreday have it planned out. I talked to a guy that built a drag truck out of a 68 c10 shortbox. He lowered the rear 4 inches with 4 inch drop springs, but he had to use the heavy duty springs as stocks were not stiff enough. For the front he used the original small block springs and cut 1 and a half coils off to lower the front more than the rear. He also had a big block in the front which helped drop the front end more. I think by having the front lower than the rear it helped with the weight distribution when he took off. Other than that i don"t think he did anything else to the truck. Oh wait he did have a tonneau cover on the bed.

Re: Anyone drag a 72 C20?? Setup help

yeah, its funny you mentioned the tonneu cover. I just watched a youtube video of a guy running with the tailgate down on his pretty fast 72! A tonneu cover would be the way to go, or leaving the tailgate up. It's actually been proven that there is less drag with the tailgate up, because the bed forms a pocket of air, that allows the flowing air to glide over. As far as cutting the stock springs, I've never done that. it seems, without looking at them, that the cut would have to fall on an angle that would not sit right in the coil bases? Do you cut from the top or the bottom? any suggestions anyone?

I'd go with a tonneau cover, tailgate up does induce drag. I picked up quite a bit of top end speed when I went to a tailgate net on a '72 LWB I used to have.

You cut on the bottom of the spring. The top does not matter where it sits. The bottom is what does. You just turn it so it fits right on the control arm. The guy i talked to though did mention that without the shocks on when he would jack it up the springs would fall out of place.
