Flexplate

I have been having starter and flexplate problems. I keep grinding the teeth off both. The truck is a 72 402bb, is there different flexplates for his year? I have been shiming the starter . But with no luck. Has any one else ran into this problem??

You should have a 14" dia flex plate(168 tooth) on your truck,& it will take a staggered pattern on the starter. i have seen many chevs that needed 3 or 4 shims under the outside corner only on the starter to get the proper clearance. For a quick check, you should be able to slide a 1/8" rod tween the OD of the flexplate, & the armature shaft(not loose, but not tight). If the clearance is too loose, shim the outside of the starter only. If its too tight shim under both bolts. also, you might check that the starter bolts arent bent, & that the front brace is in place. the only other flex plate for the chevs(more car app) was a 12 3/4" dia,153 tooth.......& my bet is if you have the pcs mixed, the starter wont even touch the flex plate when engaged. good luck.....crazyL
