Carb or fuel tank?

I just got a 72 1 ton with a flat deck on it. The PO took the tank out of the cab and put it on the deck. When the truck is cold it starts and runs fine but after about 5 mins it stalls and most times wont start again for a couple of hours. I put a new fuel pump on but that hasn't helped. I put a clear fuel filter on it and you can see the fuel being pumped and then it just slowy starves itself. It has a 4bbl Quadrejet on it and when it runs it runs real nice. I am just stumped on what might be the problem.

Re: Carb or fuel tank?

sounds like a clogged line to me. you might also check to see if there is another filter mounted somewhere that is plugged up, you never know where a po might have put one.

Re: Carb or fuel tank?

it sounds like the tank doesn't have an air vent to allow air into the tank. this would cause it to create a suction but then stop it because no air getting into the tank. I could be wrong but try removing the cap to see if that helps.

Re: Carb or fuel tank?

Your explanation of the clear filter says on face value of fuel starvation (after 5 min does the filter go dry?), I am wondering if a line got kinked when the tank got relocated or what route it takes that may cause a slow flow.
if you pull the hose from the pump and put it in a can full of fuel does it still stall after 5 min.?
eliminate 1 thing at a time, keep it simple... back track to a can of fuel and expand from there.

my 2 cents...

good luck!

Tank not venting. Remove the cap and run the truck. See what happens.

Re: Carb or fuel tank?

you'd be amazed at how often the fuel filters are almost empty when the engine is running. I say don't call it fuel starvation, untill you crack open the carb and SEE the lack of ffuel.
Tank location wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Re: Carb or fuel tank?

Well I am pretty sure it is the carb. The next question is do I put in a carb kit or just get a rebuilt carb? It is a Quadrajet by the way
