93 With a front end noise from the 88-98 forum

Well I had to drive my 93 for a long trip yesterday. I knew there was a noise in the front I thought either was a wheel bearing or front differential bearing. It was never really loud just annoying. Now on the way home last night the noise got worse. It sounds almost like a egg tire thump thump thump. Tires are newer so idont think thats the issue.

I looked under the front end and saw some wet areas were the front CV go into the transfer case. I dont know how to check the wheel bearings. And now thinking about the U joints are still stock with 172K.

Any suggestions on what to look at to try and figure this out? I would like to keep it out of the shop if all possible.

Im thinking repalce the wheel bearings and U Joints?

Jack the front end up and pull/push on the top of the tires. If they move then you probably have wheel bearing issues. You could also try putting the front tires on the back and see if the noise goes away.

Didnt think of the tire swith. I thought pulling/ pushing the top of the tire that way would tell you had a bad ball joint... just now relized that thats not right .....

Anything to tell me if my bearings are bad in the Front Diff?

Re: 93 With a front end noise from the 88-98 forum

One thing that happened to mine was one of the front axles slid out. I hit a little pot hole and it started thumping. Just check both sides of your of you diff to make sure that the axle is all the way against the housing. It can be easy to miss but if you looking for it you'll see it.
If it is not you can just slide it back in. But it won't go easy. What I had to do is: pull the wheel from whatever side you need to fix. I got a steel bar and a hammer and hit it in where the cv axle bolt are. You got to hit it pretty good and if it doesn't go turn the axle a little and try again until the splines are lined up. Just make sure to go all the way in so the seal seals and the clip can lock the axle.
If you've got your torsion bars cranked this can happen, especially the right side, because the cv axle have to stretch and they pull on the axles and the axles are made to just pull out.
