should I buy another truck to restore the frame suspension?

found 2 67-72's down the road from me...

1-1969-1970 lwb chevy pretty much comeplete outside of motor, 3 spd. bottom of the line truck, has coil springs 6 lug big dent in cab
2-1967 gmc
leaf springs lwb 250ci inline 6 3 spd 6 lug missing bed lots of patina lol

kinda looking for a truck to do a 'frame off' (drive my 68, pull off sheetmetal and restore a frame suspension drivetrain for my 68 sheetmetal)

I could get either truck for id say 100$ (he says hes gonna haul em off for scrap lol) only thing is I dunno if he's got or can find the titles.....

Im 17 still in school, would be a fun experience since i cant tear down my dd because its my dd lol. put new bushings in everything clean it up new brake lines brakes disc brakes some drop spindles lowring springs rear gas tank etc...then throw my sheetmetal on it eventually...

EDIT: New cab bed rubber mounts also lol
por 15 on the frame
new bushings bearings gaskets brake shoes balljoints

everything to make a stock, rolling frame would $1000 do it?

I wanna make a clean reliable DD eventually...am i stupid to think this?

Dad even thinks it'd be fun but still thinks i should just buy a new truck and not waste my time making an older truck 'like new'.

Gonna talk to the old fella again maybe this weekend..take another look

Id LOVE to have the gmc but i really wanna have coil springs (ease of lowering and there different) and the front clips are cool!

ok, lets hear it!

I don't see anything wrong with what you want to do. You might explain to your dad that the new trucks are all crap and have no collectibility. Additionally you'll look a heck of a lot cooler driving down the street in a restored 67-72 truck than you would a pile of thin sheetmetal and plastic that everyone else has. Go for it!

I am doing exactly what you are thinking about doing. Take a look at my build thread listed in my sig. $1000 is about right in your cost figuring for all of the components to be replaced.

Re: should I buy another truck to restore the frame suspension?

Ok...

Im glad yall're agreeing with me, makes me wanna go for it lol!

I was looking over build threads...and wanting to let my truck rest fora few weeks while I cleaned it up (frame), then thought, well why not buy another junker for the frame, restore the frame maybe buy some lowering stuff, fresh lines and bushings..then either do some bodywork to existing cab/sheetmetal, or slap my old sheetmetal back on!

Its all good except for my motor tranny leak oil and i DO NOT WANT TO GET MY CLEAN FRAME GREASY LOL, WHICH MEANS A LIL OVERHAUL OF THE MOTOR WHICH MEANS MORE MONEY (IVE ALREADY GOT ANOTHER 350 FOR BUILDING BTW)

sorry for the caps lock, man, this is a very expensive hobby lol.

Where do you guys pick up that por 15 stuff? I think ima go with it?

You can find POR on Ebay from a vendor, and it is pretty reasonable. You can also search for a local vendor close to you. It is not available at autozone, oreillys, or any of the chain stores.

Re: should I buy another truck to restore the frame suspension?

this would be the easiest way to start a frame off. but BEWARE!! i bought a rolling frame with a junk cab on it to do this myself, after a good pressure wash i was ready to start. a good friend of mine came over to the shop one evening and we were gonna get started on rebuilding the front suspension, and while we stopped a minute to grab a water, he says it could just be me but this thing looks bent. so after a few minuates of looking at it i went a picked up a bumper i had laying around and we held it up there. needless to say they was no way it was gonna bolt up way off. sorry for being so long winded guys just wanted to share that. but just look at them closely and give it a go if they look good. as far as the chevy or gmc i would decide if i wanted coils or leafs out back.

Re: should I buy another truck to restore the frame suspension?

I would stick with the chevy for a few reasons. First of all the coils spring set up seems to be more suited to what you want in the end and they 67's used power assist steering instead of the newer power steer set up. To make the newer stuff work you have to dent/dimple the frame

Re: should I buy another truck to restore the frame suspension?

Update!

went back over today, 67 gmc he doesnt have title for he thinks

69-70chevy is his sons, he probably has title.

looked closer again today.

chevy-cab has LOTS of cowl rust, but is coil springs and HUGE dent in cab roof

gmc, has good small back window cab. rust in usual places but is leaf spring. im pretty much looking for the frame.

His son has the title to the chevy he said. I got his #, he painted our house actually, so dad may know him. His nephew in law said he was about to scrap them last summer, but prices were down. So 'zebby' (old man) said to make him and offer if i decide i want em, and we will go from there.

How do i see about getting a title? Is it legal to put another frame under a diff. cab in the state of TN?

Im thinking get both trucks.....use what i need, scrap sell give away the rest lol
