Trying to get in the game-need your opinions if this is the right place to start.
Hey guys, just posted my intro in the welcome section. I do not know much about mechanics or classic trucks, but I am selling my Harley and starting in this venture eager to learn. My dream truck would be a 72 cheyenne or sport 4x4 short bed but that will have to wait until later.
I am looking at this 72 cheyenne. http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/1431755287.html It seems to run good the AC does not work but frame appears to be in good shape. Guy says 7000 on rebulit 350 and 350 auto trans. Some surface rust and a family friend who owns 55, 56,57 chevy show cars and 59 show truck, said that he would not pay more than 3000 for it. mileage reads 57000, so i am sure its 157000. The numbers on the Vin and Spid match. CCE1428100640 BX2, C60, F59,J70, L08, N40, V63, Z53, 466, A11, B85, DG6, G50, LS9, M49, P01, VF1, Z84. MODEL #-CE10934. I decifered as much as I could but not sure what else to look for. Tried to do as much Search button research as I could so that I would not be completely ignorant. Tell me wat you guys think, I was thinking offering 3500 max. I will be using it as a daily for a couple months and just tinkering with it. Figured it was a good starter for learning. You could try your offer, but I don't think that will get you into that truck. That is half of what the guy is asking and the paint looks fairly fresh. If that is the max you want to spend, you can probably find another truck fairly nice for that price. Trevor

Are you sure you're wanting a LWB? Decide now, and save yourself some headaches... If you are thinking of converting that truck to a SWB, don't do it... Just buy a SWB first.

Re: Trying to get in the game-need your opinions if this is the right place to start.
6 grand would be a high price but not out of line. the only selling points is a fresh eng/trans-that by itself doesn't get that price. he's maybe asking 6 hoping for 5. ac doesn't work drop a thousand and your only 500 apart, not exactly an insulting offer. i think you think enough of the truck so make the offer. but like others have said if you really want a short 4x4, save or keep looking for one.
just my $2 worth. |

If that were my truck, I wouldn't sell it for less than 5k. Shop trucks on Fleabay and see what 3k buys you. It would end up costing you more than 6k total plus your time to get it to that condition.
* I'm looking at the pics from my iPhone, but from what I can tell the paint, bumpers and engine look clean. |

That truck is the exact model and color as mine... although the condition is much better from the photos.
If everything matches, you like the color, and you are OK with the LWB it's worth what the other guys here are saying. If not... get a SWB.

Re: Trying to get in the game-need your opinions if this is the right place to start.
I appreciate the suggestions. I called and offered the guy 3,500. He said he would call me back tomorrow after he talked to his family. I wish I could find a decent condition 72 cheyenne sb 4x4 but they are a little pricier, I have about 5,000-6,000 I can spend if i have to. I will be using whatever I buy as a daily driver for a couple of months and heat and AC are imperative because my kid will be riding with me. After January I wont have to drive it dailyand I can start learning the ropes. He said he could get the heat and AC blowing, I may call him back and offer 4,000 if he gets the ac and heat working or maybe I can find the 4x4 sb. Keep your eyes peeled for me and any more advice is welcomed with open arms.

Doesn't that VIN say that this truck is the 640th truck off the assembly line. That would make it a VERY early truck and maybe worth a little more.

Looks like a nice truck. If you can buy it for 3500 bucks I'd say you did very, very well. Saying it has 7000 mi on a rebuild doesn't mean anything if he can't back it up with paperwork... LockDoc

Welcome to the board from Lake County California! If you're looking for a crash course of information about our trucks, you came to the right place. It's totally up to you, but I think you should wait and get what you want. You said you have a sum of money above what you were going to offer for that truck, I would use that to get your 72 4X4 SWB instead. The price will vary widely depending on condition, so get one that needs a little work and later you can fix it up the way you want.

Re: Trying to get in the game-need your opinions if this is the right place to start.
Don't settle for something you don't really want. Go for the 72 SWB 4x4 now. You can find a decent running driving one for the money you are looking to sepnd. It may not ahve a new paint job and may have a few other issues but that can be fixed over time.

Re: Trying to get in the game-need your opinions if this is the right place to start.
welcome. don't settle...i was looking for a blazer and found a really good deal on a 69 SWB 4X4. i am in the process of a frame-off and have spent some $$$...then a blazer right down the road became available. could have it for half of what i got going on now...if i had been a little more patient...recently bought a blazer but not near the condition of the one that got away...good luck...and the biggest problem with settling is the $$$$ whne you go after what you want....s.

Re: Trying to get in the game-need your opinions if this is the right place to start.
First off, welcome to the board...you are in good hands!
IMHO.. I would look for someone local to check it out...heck, it might be worth $300 or $6000. Who knows. Pictures can be very deceiving. If he's willing to Rx the heating/cooling and is also willing to talk to "the family", he might be under the gun to sell right now. Considering you are new to the hobby, it might be a good idea to get a good solid truck for right now, LB or SB and worry about the "dream" truck later down the road. You can always drive plus improve this one and sell it later. Again, have an outside source check it out... ...maybe someone local here on the board can help. |

That truck looks pretty good in the pictures if it looks that good in real life I'd say 5 easy up here in washington, assuming similar regional markets....

ETsC10, I think you are probably right about getting something that runs strong and I can work on while I learn. I can get my "dream truck later on down the road", lord knows Im not made of money right now. I am going to look at two more 72's tomorrow. I will let you guys know and try to post some better pics.

If that's my truck and there aren't any hidden issues then I'm not coming off that price tag. Who knows, he might need to sell though.
