Any tricks to remove spray paint markings?

Are there any tricks to removing spray paint markings (like from a junk yard) on a body panel without damaging the original paint underneath?

My 78 K20 came with a pair of straight front fenders that are even the same color as my truck but the vehicle was at the end of a row and had spray painted markings on them.

While we are at it are there any tricks to removing the grease pencil markings they put on everything?

I think gas removes the grease pencil markings.

Re: Any tricks to remove spray paint markings?

spray paint comes off a ton easier than the stock paint. you can probably use acetone or brake clean without hurting the factory paint. a good polish might even take the spray paint off.

brake fluid, acetone? Come on guys, he is trying to save the paint.

I would hit it with a clay bar and see what happens. For any tough spots, trying working it with mineral spirits.

Re: Any tricks to remove spray paint markings?

STOP STOP STOP

easy off oven cleaner ( YELLOW CAN ONLY) and a soft paint brush......
spray the spay paint let it sit for a couple min the gently brush away the spray paint.....

Wash the truck clean then IF NEEDED lightly buff by hand then a good coat of wax

this is the quikest easiest way to remove vandle marks or even door lettering and it safe for the OEM paint as long as you dont let it sit there for a loooong time what it does is work from the edges in you'll see it

Wow! Vandal Mark Remover. It is made to remove spray paint.

There are a lot of companies that make this stuff. You could ask at your local hardware or parts/Auto bay supply store. Or you can google it.

Lacquer thinner will work too. Just wax it afterwards.

Good ole WD - 40 might be good on the grease pencil (?) 3M makes an "Adhesive Cleaner" that I use at work for cleaning and degreasing electrical enclosures before I scuff and paint them. That might be good also. Also - buffing compound ?

Re: Any tricks to remove spray paint markings?

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try mineral spirits first then lacquer thinner since I have them on hand then go to the store for some yellow can easy off if needed.

I will document the process to see what works and what doesn't.

I do have some of the 3M adhesive remover so I will give that a try too.

My work vehicle got "tagged" and rubbing compound removed the spray paint without any damage.

Re: Any tricks to remove spray paint markings?

That is good to know. I will give it a try if the other things I have on hand don't work.

I don't know about getting the paint off once it's on....but a .223 stops the application process in a hurry.

Yea, but you also have a hole through both sides of your truck too. Better off to use the 45 ACP.

I was assigned the horrible task of having to test fire a batch of 400 M-16's that we just finished converting from full auto to 3-round burst

We were shooting them though a concrete culvert pipe on the M-60 machine gun range in case one went out of control. One of the SP's watching went and got a Kevlar helmet and set it on the culvert pipe. He pulled out his 9mm side arm and took a shot at it. All it did was chip the surface of the Kevlar. He turned it around and took a shot at it with his personal 45 ACP. It went flying and ended up with a huge dent in the inch thick Kevlar that almost made it all the way through. It for sure would have broken your neck if it hit you. He then had me take a shot at the helmet with the M-16 with standard NATO green tip rounds, nothing special. The .223 went clean through both sides of the helmet without even knocking it off the culvert pipe. Dead meat.

That's why I always enjoyed carrying a 1911 Colt on my hip when I was in the Army.
