Is anyone running one of these right now, how well do they perform.

That may be the one I have, but Im not sure. Mine runs fine and hasnt given me one problem and I have had it for 3.5 years. Why is there a $100 core charge?

EDIT:
Install it yourself and youll have a 3 year warranty, they dont know your miles.

I,m not sure I'm actually going to buy it local for 1520 with no core from the dealership. They are probably asking for cores so they can rebuild them and sell them and make more money off them

Thats the standerd replacment 350. Nothing speacial. Very good engines. Go to www.73-87.com and look for the goodwrrench build up article. They took that exact engine and built it up with heads/cams/intakes/carbs and finally a blower.

Look threw the GM catalog a little more though. You'll find somthing everyone misses. A replacment enigne for earlie 90's caprices. Its also a 4bolt main, but slightly higher compression AND A ROLLER CAM. All for just $200 more. Thats a steal. Better compression and most importantly the roller cam. Need I say more?

I have one in my truck. Of course it is far from being what it started out as. I have had no problems at all, but I don't have a lot of miles on it. I've had it for 4 years though.

Like I said, if you just want a decent engine and don't plan on doing a lot to it but stick it in and drive, go for it.

I wish I had done different than what I did. When I bought mine I was going for a good daily driver. One thing led to another and well....we all know how it goes, right?

I plan on driving the crap out of it and if it blows, then build what I should have built in the first place.

For the price of this engine, you can't go wrong IMO.

I agree for the money its great. I paid just under $1200 for mine and with every single thing I needed to add it came to just under $1500. Thats will new radiator and all kinds of stuff. My father had a friend at a local dealer and got a few bucks off most the stuff. The bill would have been just over $1800 I think.

If I was to do it again, I would get more power. Its cool and everything, but once you have more you want more and it doesnt stop till you die.

I agree Eddie. Once the power bug bites you, it's in your blood your whole life. There may be lags for years, but it's still there. When I did mine, I had no intention of doing any power things. It all started with a Performer intake. Man, I sure would have a lot more money if I had stopped there.

My advice, set down and think real hard about what you want. If you are planning on headers, intake, cam, heads, etc., buy something else, or have one built like you want/need it.

Some day I plan on building another engine, my self. This time it will have some of the best parts. For now, I've got other things to spend money on.

I had one in my '83. It was a few years ago and I only paid $1056 for it. Put close to 100k on it without any problems--when I put a new motor in my '79 I'll buy another one of them.

crate engine

I just put one in about 6 months ago. I did alot of shopping around and you cant beat it. I am very happy with it. I put it in my 78 blazer. I also put Thorley headers and a 3' exhaust system on it and runs great. I have a 4" lift and 35's on it too.

And remember, if you don't open it up, it has a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty. Can't beat that with a stick.

I agree for a daily driver it's the best deal out there. I love mine even though it's a bit more than that I have had great luck with it once I got all the tweaks out.

What i am trying to figure out is why there are some dealerships charging a core, and why there is such a price difference between different dealerships even around town here

I dont really know. Make sure its the exact same part number. They do have one more then one crate engine. There shouldnt be a core charge at all. The crate engines are new (everything, even the block). If they try to charge you a core asking them why. You should expect to pay around $1300 for it before tax or anything. I sold my engine the way it sat, minus the parts I needed for the new one, for $100 to my dads friend. He was hoping it was a 350, but it was a 305. He was still happy, because he builds engines in his spare time and makes some extra money.

Okay i just called the dealership. GM has institues a new rebuild program so they are requiring core for all new motors. But they also dropped their prices it has went from 1520 to 1295

I would take a seasoned, overbored block anyday over a new one. The used block has already core shifted and gone threw heat cycles, so the bores will stay rounder.

What do you mean by this? As far as I know, core shift is what causes the block to be machined other than it was intended AFTER it is cast and has nothing to do with what happens as the block wears.

An example would be the cam bore not being centered in the block casting causing one side of the ribbing and support material to be thinner than the other.

core shift happens as the engine goes threw heat cycles. The constant heating/cooling makes everything "come together" better, and as a result shifts things around a little. Some blocks dont have any shifting, some are bad. Most all blocks have a little bit, but nothing major that is a problem.
