Rear Air-bag Question
ok guys, have a few questions, i am doing the rear airbags on my '67 SWB, no notch, putting the bag in the stock spring location, heres the problem, the bag studs are too short to get enough threads through the frame & cross member to let the nut bite. Hence the stripped stud, cause i wasnt paying attention.
so i am accessing my options and this is what i have come up with.. 1. take out factory cross member brace and run that setup. (any downfall?) would be temporary till i can build the bridge. 2. or just dive in and remove entire cross member and build bridge as i would like to eventually lay frame. Any comments, suggestions, or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks CM

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
Buy a Slam Specialties RE-7 bag (or like kind bag) that will take a bolt.
Alot easier than rebuilding your frame.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
yeah there is, and i would love to buy new bags, but funds are tight, looking for a cheap way to make a quick fix. i means its eight rivets, and with a air hammer its no work.
and i do plan on notching with a bridge eventually so. Thanks for the input guys! CM

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
I think removing that crossmember without replacing it with something else would not be wise.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
Go to your local hardware store and get a threaded rod connector, then you can lengthen your stud. However I have no idea if it would be strong enough or if you would have room. Just a thought from an old hardware store owner. Or what about a shock extender would that work ?

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
is that the original frame or did you weld a plate to bolt the bag to?

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud

my frame is bone stock in the rear. rivets and all.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
I'll tell you what my experience has been when "trying" to take the cheap route. Its ususally cheaper in the long run just to get the right parts the first time, and be done with it. I've spend more money trying to makke something fit or work after I accidently messed something up, I end up still going to get another part or correct part to fix it.
Like lolife99 says get a different bag. Thats my .02 worth.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
alright so the general consensus is swapping to an RE7 or similar, with a bolt style mount, instead of stud.
well off to make some side money... still curious if anyone has removed that support and had issues.. thats everyone.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
You can remove that brace with no problems, there are other crossmembers that will support the frame. However, I don't understand how that will contribute to laying frame, I'd say buy the doms or slams with the bolt hole.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
another alternitive would be to shorten the stud, then weld on addtitional thread (all thread). My tig welder gets me out of this kind of trouble all the time.

Re: Stripped Air-bag Stud
Man with welder can build anything. then all the other gotstahave tools come into play. Then you'll have to have a bigger tool box to keep them all in, oh then there isn't enough room so a bigger garage is a must. the trickle down effect. OH you better get several side jobs. playing with old stuff isn't cheap.
