Transmission question
I'm new to this area of the board, usually over in the 67-72 portion.
Anyway my Grandpa has an 83 S-10 4x4 and the tranny is taking a crap in it. My question is will a 700r4 out of a fullsize truck work in it? Any and all information is appreciated.

Re: Transmission question
Does it have a 200r-4 or a 700r-4 in it now?

Re: Transmission question
If it has a 2.8L 60 degree V6 in it... A dual bolt pattern 2004R or a standard
700R4 is not going to fit. best bet is to have it rebuilt |

Re: Transmission question
I do believe it is a 2.8 V6. I don't think they started the 4.3 until around 87 or so did they?

Re: Transmission question
Its the 2.8, and if you saw the truck you would know that its not worth paying to have the tranny rebuilt. I always just assumed they had 700r4 in them. Found some used ones for around $200 and thought i would kick that idea around a bit.

Re: Transmission question
There is a 700r4 for the smaller bell housing. It was used behind the 2.2 in the newer s10. Not sure if the starter mounts on the right or left though. The s10 got the 4.3 in '88. I don't know what trans you have, but I would look for a used one. A salvage yard should be able to tell you what it is. If the truck isn't worth a rebuilt trans, is it worth the work to replace the trans with a used one? S-10s are pretty cheap.

Re: Transmission question
Well here's the problem with replacing the whole truck. My grandpa bought it new, my grandma picked it out, and that thing has been everywhere. Something like 280,000 miles on it. He won't get rid of it tried that a couple times by buying some used cars, but sold them and kept the truck. So for my grandpa's sake yeah it is worth changing the transmission, but paying to have one rebuilt.
