New guy with a 68 GMC Burb
Just like the title said I am new to this era truck and I have never owned anything this big!! LOL. Got a heck of a deal for what i paid for it. It has a 3916323 396 engine in it. Runs like a champ! Well got plans for it but I will share later. Enjoy and I look forward to building this one. For now my 66 is on hold, sorry baby I wont forget you. LOL

Re: New guy with a 68 GMC Burb
I see some nice additions... the tilt and sierra horn button are real nice, a big block is always cool, buddy buckets (if I am not mistaken, those are out of a dodge) rock.
Not diggin the semi tail lights too much, but that's personal preference there. I have to agree with you on the grill. I do love the GMC grill, but the 67/68 chevy nose looks killer... esp on a burb. Looks like a good start, can we ask what you paid? |

Well I'm about $1800 deep in it. I have been talking to my body man and hope to start on it soon, like 2 weeks, but we all know body shop time frames. Lol

Congratulations on your "new" burb!
Welcome to the burb family Yea, the tail lights are not my thing either. Though I bet they light up brighter than the originals.

I am looking for ideas on what to do about the lights. Not sure I just know I want to take those off.

Re: New guy with a 68 GMC Burb
Nice score! In my opinion I would keep the 68 gmc nose, they dont look too bad with the 67-68 hood and front trim, besides everybody is switching to the 67-68 chevy nose. If you ever decide to part with those bumper guards I got first dibs

Re: New guy with a 68 GMC Burb
I have to say keep the GMC front end just switch to the 67 grill with the embossed lettering and drop the GMC from the hood. Looks like you scored big time on this one

Call me a hillbilly but I kinda like those taillights. I never thought the originals looked quite right. Nice find!

Nice score. Those tails better than factory: negatory, but I'm sure whatever you come up with will be

Re: New guy with a 68 GMC Burb
well rob beat you to the bumper guards, I believe he call dibs first. LOL. Just working on getting a plan together and working out some details. Trying to make it a running project I dont think I want to tear it all the way down. Lack of space and also knowing how projects snow ball that way. I will keep you guys updated.

Re: New guy with a 68 GMC Burb
Thats about what I've got in mine so I'd say you did good! Mine was a 68 CST C-10 with the 396, 3 seats and factory cruise control. i mainly bought it because the one that I wanted from the guy (72 with all options including dual air, tilt, cruise and big block) was sold by the time I arrived. He didn't want to sell the other one but after having driven from Dallas to Hobbs and spending 3 days hasseling him i got the truck and didn't have to go home empty handed and face the wife. Anyhow.. another story for another time.
That horn cap is a killer to find. i had one and was without a truck so I sold it and now that I've got two trucks I cannot find one to save my life. I'd say keep the GM Grill. They are a nice change and if you deck burb out with the factory Sierra Grand truck trim it'll work out to be a beautiful package. I've always preferred the sierra grand 1/2 ton shortbed trucks to the chevy version cheyanne super's. Just a better look in my opinion. besides, having quad headlamps give you a couple of options that us chevy guys dont have, like running the BMW style halo headlamps. If you ever decide to get rid of the core support and grill let me know. I'd be interested on the "dare to be different" basis alone. On the taillight's, I'd peel off a patch panel from any junkyard longbed to fix the body surround and run the truck taillights and trim. Just to match, swap out the skin the burb tailgate or even double doors lower skin with the script section of a pickup tailgate from the 67/72 era. I've always wanted to see that. You do both of these and you could get away with running the full deluxe tailgate trim, maybe set the burb up with the full sierra grand trim package. We all know burbs didn't come with beltline trim but for those not in the know it would be a nice subtle change that most people would have to do a double take to acknowledge.. Then all your missing is a nice two tone paint job to match, slam the thing on an air ride suspension running 18x10s in the front on 275s and run 20x12" on 315s in the rear. Probably torque thrusts would look best. I'd bet everyone would be scratching their head about that trim. Even those magazine guys that think they know everything!! |
