Determining 2wd or 4wd (69-72)?

What features will assist in determing if a Blazer/Jimmy is in fact a 2wd vs. 4wd?

Frame differences
VIN#
Tub differences

What do you need to look for?

A front axle and driveshaft.

Sorry Nate, I couldn't resist! Ya gotta admit, you left yourself wide open for that though!

Ok there Wynne, that's the last time I ask for assistance from you. Why don't you just go build another beautiful truck...

Re: Determining 2wd or 4wd (69-72)?

2wd model key components...

frame differences - frame will be 104" wheelbase with rear coil springs with trailing arms - not leaf spring on the 4wd

VIN - will begin with a C if it is a factory 2wd. If the first digit of the VIN of the truck is a K - it was originally a 4wd.

front axle - 2wd - upper and lower arms and springs - not leaf spring straight axles like you find on a 4x4..

Tub differences - none. Except most of the 2wd Blazers I have found were rusted beyond belief...

Nate,... look at the rear frame rails. They should have the same shock crossmember as your truck. Coil spring area of the frame should look the same also.

Re: Determining 2wd or 4wd (69-72)?

I think the stock 2wd engine sits about 4" forward of the 4wd. This puts the transfer case shifter in a reasonable location. I think the frames have holes for both motor mount locations but a bad conversion will still have the engine in the stock location.

Re: Determining 2wd or 4wd (69-72)?

Thanks for the information guy's! I haven't been able to make it back out to look at the reason I made this thread.

As soon as I can get back out there and get some pics I will.
