How Do I Remove The Coating?

Hey guys, I got the center bar trim and and emblem off an 85-87 grille and I'd like to have the center polished like another members truck. My question is, how can I get the coating off the center bar trim? How can I soften it up? The coating is the colored part of the trim, it matches the truck it came off of, but I don't want that.

Thanks
Benjamin.

Re: How Do I Remove The Coating?

Is it coating, or just paint? I thought it was painted. You may try some paint thinner or lacquer thinner

Re: How Do I Remove The Coating?

It's a coating like tape or something because it's wrapped around to the backside. I'm trying to peel it off but it's being very stubborn.

Blow dryer or heat gun if it is tape. Be careful with the heat gun on the plastic.

It's not on plastic, it's on aluminum. I'll give that a try.

Re: How Do I Remove The Coating?

Once you get the tape off use carb & choke spray cleaner on a rag to remove any left on adhesive, It works well without scratching.

Heat gun works really well. Thats how I did mine. Then I just used a polishing wheel on a bench grinder to get the residue off. It cleans up beautiful since its stainless. Funny they never offered it that way factory.

I am trying some 3m adhesive removal right now. I'll let it sit for a bit.
