Proportioning Valve Rebuild?

Is it possible to disassemble and rebuild one of these are are they pretty much fool proof from the get go?

Was doing a final check before going to get my truck inspected today and found my parking brake wasn't working correctly. Never used it since I picked it up so I never noticed it. Tried bleeding the brakes but got no fluid out of the rears... hit the proportioning valve with a test light and it lit up so the valve is "popped". Cracked open the fronts, and closed the rears and pumped the brakes but I cannot get the valve to reset.

Do they generally go bad over time or should I begin digging into the rear brakes more to see if there is some other problem? Not seeing any fluid leaks anywhere at the rear wheels.

Figured I would ask before tearing stuff down even more.

Thanks

Re: Proportioning Valve Rebuild?

been there done that!
i wouldn't rebuild the proportioning valve, they're just stubborn sometimes and wont reset. you might need to have someone hold the button on the proportioning valve while you pump the brakes to get it to re-center

Re: Proportioning Valve Rebuild?

i wouldn't buy the prop valve listed above, GM was dumb about changing it from year to year, things might not line up, and thread sizes will be different, learned that the hard way

Re: Proportioning Valve Rebuild?

How would I go about moving the valve back over manually? Really want/need to get my truck back on the road for some projects I want to get done but I can't get it inspected with this issue o.0

Would rather not replace it if I don't have too.

Thanks

Ill see if i can take pics its kinda buried... but their is a nut facing the passenger side pull that off and with a small screwdriver push it towards the driver side. I fought the back brakes for a year on my pile that finally made them bleed, BTW i let them gravity bleed afterwards

Re: Proportioning Valve Rebuild?

what does the prop have to do with the ebrake?

yes ou can take it out completely but why would you? they are a semi reduntant saftey feature.

why would you rebuild it when they are free at the junk yard?

sometimes they just crap out and wont reset. i had one sieze after 6 months sitting, worked perfect before.

Re: Proportioning Valve Rebuild?

as far as taking one out of a junk yard !! i would hate to remove one and then install it to find it as bad as one in the truck to start with!!as far as removing it completely ive had cars in the past that didnt have one from factory !!
i brought a booster and master off a 84 2wd to install my 78 after i fitted it i found out there is a number of different boosters and masters that why im stuck on what wrong with my trucks front brakes i simply dont have any fuild to the calipers

thats why you would put one in every pocket. odds are 4 arent going to be bad.
