My 1969 CST 396 build thread - stock, of course!

I posted this truck that I bought last summer. I started out fixing up a nice daily driver, but ended up going full out restoration!

Here she is like I found her sitting out in a field. It is a 1969 SWB CST with factory 396, TH-400 and bucket seats. However, no A/C, manual steering, and warning lights! The previous owner parked it when the rear end started making noise (it was completly out of oil). The motor had been built a few years back and still runs good. The body was pretty rough - cab had some pretty serious rust in firewall, rockers, visor area, etc... I decided that the cab was too far gone and have replaced it with another nice A/C cab. I'll also be adding a few rare accessories in the build!

Most of the body work and paint is complete. I found a local painter with years of experience. He gave me a good deal since I brought him the truck completly dissassembeled and I'm putting it back together. He is doing super work! He had to put rockers and a cab corner in the cab. He got inside the cab (back side of cab corner) and worked it so you cannot tell that one was ever put in. The truck was originally white/light blue. I've decided to go white/Hugger orange. Enjoy!

Here's first stages of paint work and sandblasting the frame. My paint man showed me how to run his blaster and let me do the rest. I know why now - that thing will give you a work out and get you filthy!

Re: My 1969 CST 396 build thread - stock, of course!

Here's the cab and frame painted. I told him not to worry too much about the bottom of the cab because I would apply the factory undercoating. He talked me into finishing the bottom side too - and for no extra charge! I'm starting to get the parts back in my garage. Now comes the fun part - putting it all back together!!

Josh,

That cab really looks great and really will stand out with the Orange and White combo. That will be a neat truck once you are finished.

Another Chevy being brought back to life. I'm lovin it.

special-K ... brings up a very good point. Most of our trucks that are restored are actually better than when they left the factory. Better paint, better panel fit etc.

You found THAT? Sitting in a FIELD? I hope you ran out and bought a lotto ticket!
BTW, dont be surprised about the idiot lights and no air... remember, these trucks were commonly special ordered by the purchaser... those were the days.

Josh, that truck has changed a whole lot since I seen it last. I'm going to have to come by and look at it. The paint job looks very good. Thanks again for the panhard bar, Jeff.

Re: My 1969 CST 396 build thread - stock, of course!

Thanks for the comments! I just took the bed to his shop last week to start on it. Slowly getting the frame put back together so I can roll it around. I actually got my paint at O'Reilly auto parts (that's where my painter gets his supplies). The paint is a 1970 model truck Hugger orange - paint code 524 from Ditzler paint sheet. The 69 car Hugger orange has a different code number. The truck color has a slight hint of red in it. I'll add some more pics soon.

awesome looking truck. my plan for my uncle's 72 cheyenne/20 4x4 is hugger orange and white with lots of added goodies. keep the pics coming so i can use them for inspiration, lol.
there used to be a loaded 72 suburban here in town-p-s, p-b, a-c, buckets, tilt and idiot light guage package, never knew why they didn't cough up a couple extra bucks for full guages when it was ordered.

Re: My 1969 CST 396 build thread - stock, of course!

Progress has been slow the past few months due to cold weather and changing shifts at work. I pulled the heads and had them worked. As for the motor, I just put a gasket kit in it (it had been rebuilt a few years ago). Here's my theory on suspension parts : I'm doing a pretty nice restoration, but I don't have deep enough pockets for a "every nut and bolt" restoration. The suspension parts worked fine before the tear down and the truck definitly won't be driven much. Each suspension component was removed, media blasted and repained to correct color. I did buy new rubber bushings and dust caps. I'll add some more pictures soon.
