I have a custom fuel tank and picked up a Bosch 023 internal pump for it. The Bosch Pump does not use a sock like Walbro, it has a screen that is built into it. How close should the bottom of the pump be to the bottom of the tank? Seems like you would want it close but not too close.

I am doing the exact same thing. Just bought a Bosch 044 pump and they sell a sock for it.

By the way are you using a in bed tank? The reason I ask is that this pump is over 9" long and most of the in bed tanks are only about 8.5" deep......

You want the pump as low as possible so it want suck air into it if it get's low on gas. The baffeled tanks are the only way to go if using a electric in tank pump. This holds the fuel in the area of the pump so it want starve and suck air. You also want the return line to go all the way down to the bottom also so it want cause static inside the tank.

I got my 023 from Jay. I got that one instead of the 040 because it has the filter built in. The 040 with the sock would be too long. The 023 is a little over 7" long. And my tank is ECE under bed unit and is 9-1/2" deep. BTW, read up on the Jay sock, there are complaints coming back that the sock is getting sucked into the pump. There were also some fixes for that.

It is a baffled tank and I have the pump sitting down about 1/4 inch above the bottom of the tank. I could move it down further but was afraid to get it might cause some restriction if I had it sitting right on the bottom of the tank.

The return is a stainless tube and is also about 1/4" off of the bottom. I was a little concerned that it exists right were the pump intake is. I was thinking about running a rubber hose away from the intake.

Wow, thanks very much, this has not been as easy as I thought. I haven't purchased the tank yet, so maybe I will run this thing inline instead.

I wouldn't worry about the return being close to the intake as long as it's returning fuel.

Any consensus about the pump being 1/4" from the bottom. Too close, too far?

Or sell the Bosch and use a Walbro, they are much shorter. I like the Bosch because they are not as sensative to debris. But I also have a Walbro in my Jeep and it works perfect.

I think the 1/4" is a good number, as far as brands go I use whatever O-riley sell's for a factory replacement in mine. I went through a bunch of them before I broke down and bought a baffeled tank. I haven't replaced one in about 5 years now. I use the bousch too I think but mine has the sock on it.

Leave the return where it is the returned fuel will also feed the pump.
