bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

I stopped by Checker auto and purchased some Moog Inner and outer Tie rods, Adjuster Sleeves, and Lower Ball Joints.
Opened up all the boxes and one of the outer Tie rods was a painted black chinese piece. It was brand new, but someone must have returned chinese pieces in moog boxes to get a cheap set of Moog units.

no big deal they ordered me another one and I am picking it up in a bit.

anyone else have this happen?

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

I work at Auto Zone part time and have seen regular air filters in K&N boxes. The criminal would switch the filters in the box and pay for an STP w/ a K&N in it.

So, now I check every filter box at checkout.

I have seen all kinds of things like this.

Oh, that looks like fun right there. Lots of new parts!!

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

Had that happen with a brake rotor. Guy at Autozone pulls the box, I open it up and it was a rusty, well used rotor.

Hummm... I am seeing a trend with Autozone. Maybe the clerks should actually check the parts being returned...

you know, I dont think that it would do any good. Alot of people would probably not know the difference between a moog and a chinese part or vice versus.

Make sure you throw some paint on those Moog parts or they will be rusty in a year.
I got in a hurry on my blazer and regret it now.

I try to buy Moog stuff whenever I can also. I also try to stick with Bendix brake parts but I got a Bendix wheel cylinder the other day that had a "made in China" sticker right on the box.

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

Heck, that's pretty common in any parts chain. I've worked in parts stores a couple of different times through the years, and getting dead stuff back as a new return, or cheap parts in the good boxes, etc, was commonplace. We had rules in the stores that you would check every box coming back in. People would also come in and buy a special tool off the rack out front, go use it, then bring it back as a return.

It also happened through direct sales to repair shops. We had an air conditioner compressor come back as a core one day from a shop, or so we thought. We processed it through, sent it back to the warehouse, then the warehouse sent it on to the rebuilder. The rebuilder opened it up and found a brick. Up to that point no one had opened up the box to check.

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

I worked at a Crow-Burlingame back about 8 years ago and we had a local mechanics shop buy parts from us for all his jobs and he would always end up bringing them back about 2 weeks later and we finnally found out he was somehow buying the same brand part at online for less. We always really looked over the parts really well and the majority of the time they were the same. It was a real pain because he would bring in more that $3000 in parts all at one time. The manager finnally told him no more returns.

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

Here's a head scratcher for you.Following the Autozone theme,I just recently sent my nephew to pick up some rear brakes for a '71 and he gets back to my house and I open the box to find used brakes.Needless to say,I get back to the parts place and this guy reams me for trying to "Pull a fast one on him",but he goes for another set and when he opens the box, guess what he sees?More used brake shoes in a new box.He pulls out a third set before he finds new ones.I said to him that I was the one who was out two trips to his store,so could he cut me a deal and let me have them for cost,he said that IS my cost.I left with my returned money and not so much as an apology for my lost time. What a way to keep good costumers!

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

I work for O'Reilly's and it is NOT uncommon at all. I check EVERY box at point of sale AND return. It makes a lot of customers angry when you check the box of the returning parts because "I'm honest I wouldn't ever try to screw you". Well folks, don't take it personally because I don't know you other than you're another customer that walked in the door. The worst part is when our warehouse gets an old part as a new return they throw it back at the store and the store takes the hit and we get in trouble. It's actually less work to open every single box no matter who it is or what they're buying/returning.

This has happened to me a couple of times, especially with brakes and starters. I open every box now before I leave the store.

what's even more frustrating is when you call for a set of calipers. then you open the box to find they are both driver's side.

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

I work for Autozone and that crap happens all the time, people do get pissed when you check the boxes when they come in. I hate it when I go pull a part and it is used, the good thing for me is I can go see who did the last returns and chew somebodys butt.

since we are on the discussion of SCREWING PEOPLE OVER....
had a friend that works at at motorcycle shop tell me this one....
guy brings in a CR500 he wants to trade/sell,
all the techs are to busy to come up to check it out
so the salesman goes out and checks it over, bike looks good,
has good compression but wont start.......(remember that part)
so salesman does the deal , guy leaves, salesman pushes bike back to tech to check out and see why it wont start,
tech kicks n kicks n kicks n kicks n kicks...
pulls plug and notices green stuff on it ,
pulls head and finds a TENNIS BALL ON TOP OF THE PISTON !!!!

I wonder if that would even up the compression at all, I think the tennis ball is about an inch smaller then a cr500 piston

Re: bought some Moog parts, got chinese!!

Ever tried to compress a tennis ball? We did rear brakes on a G-Marqis a while back and the park brake shoes had come unbonded. Ordered a set from the parts house (major retailer) opened the box and there was a set of used shoes in there. Thing was, being park brake shoes, there was no wear on them. That is one time I think we came out ahead, I'll take a nearly new OE part over a aftermarket any day. Even told the customer what had happened and gave him a warrenty anyway.
