Windshield washer pump...where?
Where is the washer pup on a 1970 C20 Chevy? It has never worked since I got it. I push the button in and I get nothing, no sound at all. Is my pump just dead or is there something else wrong? Thanks

I think it is on top of the wiper motor. Mine has never worked either so I am not. I am pretty sure that it is up there though.

the best thing you can do is get a universal pump and wire it to the switch, its really easy. i can do these in about 10 mins. let me know if you detailed help.

just go to your fav parts place and ask for the universal windshield washer pump. make sure its the type you can mount to the fire wall. it comes with the pump, some extra washer hose, connectors and electrical connectors.
you dont need the kit that has the switch in it, you can use the orginal switch. the kit should cost about 12 bucks. mount the thing on the fender or on the fire wall. i have been told the fire wall works better because the pump is hight than the resivor, but i have never had any trouble. next just do the plumbing, be sure to pay attention to the out and in on the pump. i had to use some hose clamps to keep it from dripping. next run 2 wires from the pump into the cab. now is the tricky part. took me a few hours the frist time to figure it out, tore the dash off and everything. dont need too. from the drivers side lay on the floor and look up under the dash, you will see the big ass wiper motor, if you wana find it fast just turn on the wipers lol. youll hear it. there are 2 electrical pulgs on the unit. you are looking for the one with 2 wires. this frist pict is what it looks like unpluged.

i find the best thing is to yank the plug with some plyers. the connector doesnt want to come loose very easy. so just wiggle and yank. i have yet to do it by hand, always have used the plyer.
once wired you need to check to see if you have it wired right. just hit the button, if it doesnt work, swap the wires in the plug. thats all there is to it. works a hell of alot better than the orginal one. they make a rebuild kit, but after a few years the dam thing stops working.. to me, i do this to every truck. HEI and a universal pump.every truck needs one!

one more thing about plumbing. the hoses that the water run in go into the cab to the pump. doesnt need to now.you need to cut the hoses.
it ends up like this. water starts at the resivor, runs to the pump. out from the pump to a T connecter (in the kit) then each side of the t, runs dirctly to the squirter things. that leves you with hoses comming from the fire wall. i just pull them back into the cab and trim them as high as i can if you have an a/c truck, it a bit harder to get to the pump. its there, just have to dig.. good luck and let me know if you have more ???

As far as stock location if you take the radio out it's behind it to the left mounted to the firewall.

I did this with the universal washer pump I love it.
But you want to know the best thing I did? Yes it's put the LED chrome washer nozzles on. If you don't want the LED to light up just don't wire them up. But you'll be glad you did this. They spray 100% better than the cheap ass stock ones and also have 2 sprays per nozzle.

you know i reread your post. usualy you will hear a cluncking grinding sound when you hit the button. you say you dont hear anything. you might have to hunt an electrical problem down.
usualy though if you wipers work, the pump is getting power. so its prob just compleatly dead.

None of mine have ever worked either...3 trucks, none ever made a single noise. I am getting ready to install a pump on mine too just like these pictured. I got mine from Wally Wold.
In this picture you can see the Wiper motor, (the part that says Camaro). On top of it you see the white hose connections, that is the pump. |

Hey Reumster,
I've been looking at those LED washer nozzles for a while. My daily driver (Ford Escort) has the on the hood mounted nozzles which spray way better than the old fashioned tubes on our trucks. I was ready to go find a pair on an Escort in the yard until I saw them in the kids section at the local parts store. I'll be doing that upgrade for sure now that I see what it looks like. One other thing for all of us that live where it gets below freezing. NEVER EVER put water in your windshield washer reservoir. I don't care if it gets to 100 degrees in July where you live like it does here put the blue stuff in. Most of the pumps I replaced on customers cars were replaced in the winter because they tried to operate them in the cold and water (now ice) was trapped in there. The blue stuff is cheap, use it.

Thanks for taking some good advice. Most just don't want to give it a try because they're stuck in their ways. And won't admit when something just flat out works better. The LED washer nozzles are the only way to go. Or nozzles of a newer car. Just clip the wires off the LED ones. I'm going to replace my LED washer nozzles blue LEDs with amber so there legal. That way I can tell the cops to piss off.

i looked into those too, but i thought what if it froze? cant be good for the pump. and they are more $. these pumps are only 12 bucks and 10 mins of work.

I pulled a tank and pump from a (mid 90's???) S-10. It has an in tank pump. I've mounted the tank on the fender where they're located on the S-10. The pumps are almost all alike and can be picked up from a bone yard for cheap and plentiful there too! I haven't figured out how to hook up the pump until Dave's post. Now I just gotta wait 'till it quits raining (read: June)

I got a stock one out of a boneyard
I just found an old '69 in my local yard and installed that and now the pump works great. A little info. to find a working pump and find out why yours isn't working. Take your stock pump off and take a look at the little lever thingy on the pump and try moving it if it requires a sufficient amount of force to move it's o.k. mechanically. If it moves like the wind or extremely easily it's busted. If it's hard to move wiring is the issue, if not go to your local junkyard and pull pumps off old chevy's and gmc's and find one that is hard to move (the lever thingy that is) and you should be set. That's the cheapest fix I found only cost me $1.00. Hope that helps. Now, I need to get some of those cool new style nozzles. The stock ones just spit on your window!

Universal pump
I installed one of those universal pumps on my truck a few years back and it works great. There is a snag with it though. The pump always seems to lose it's prime when the truck has been sitting. I think this is because I mounted the pump on my firewall and it's above the reservoir tank. I probably should have mounted it at a lower level on the firewall so that the reservoir would gravity feed to the pump.... Then it wouldn't lose it's prime. Just a suggestion!!!!!!!! TJ

hey, i bet that is what happend 1971LT1SWBPOSI373. mine is lower and the tank and i dont have a prime problem. but like i said i did have to put a clamp on the hose to prevent leaking. good tip!

I have installed a 86 tank and pump into my 69. I had wired it up like MT dave has under the dash to keep the orginal swich intact. The nice thing about this way is that there is no pump to look at, and this tank holds more.
