NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
I just scored these NOS bumper guards off Ebay for $85 bones including shipping. The part numbers are 6264224 and 6264223. Can anyone confirm that these are for 69-72 and are they 69-70 or 71-72 or is there no difference? Also, are the vertical lines correct? Or are they supposed to be smooth? Thanks.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
I have these on both of my trucks. They are 71-72 style. My survivor truck has the smooth inserts, which are OEM.
My SWB has the ribbed inserts as pictured above. They are aftermarket. Somebody probably took the OEM ones, and replaced them with aftermarket and put them back in the OEM box. Both sets fit my trucks perfectly, the only difference being the inserts.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
I thought I read some old posts on here that indicated that GM offered the 71-72 guards with the ribs on them, maybe later in the run? I believe special-k on here said he bought some oem guards with ribs on them. He also noted that the oem guards have thicker sides on them than aftermarket. Can anyone confirm if these are oem or aftermarket? The first pic below is of an aftermarket one with the thin sides. Second ones are thick oem.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
The aftermarket ones on my truck are the same thickness as OEM. They are also USA made. They are identical to the ones you have pictured. The single you have pictured must be a different aftermarket manufacturer, the top and bottom have sharper curves to them than the originals. GM may have gone with the ribbed insert later in the run, seems very possible. Maybe SK will chime in and give his take on these.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
leddzepp, Is it possible that your aftermarket guards are really oem? Or is it possible that GM purchased guards with ribs in them from a manufacturer that also sold them in the aftermarket? Maybe GEM? I know they make these style bumper guards.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
Ok, I just e-mailed the seller and this is what he said exactly (grammar mistakes and all), for whatever its worth, "Yes they [the boxes] was sealed, I got them at gm dealer with other old gm parts I bought, some gm guards bought over the counter have ribs on the pads."

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
These are GM accessories. So,they come from another company, just like the door window visors made by Ventshade but sold as GM accessories. The ribbed ones I had I bought at the Chevy dealer.I bought two pair that day.I used one and the other pair went into my stash for years. The pair I used were smooth.Years later I took the second set out and saw they were ribbed. They were in the same type box with the same part# as the smooth set.I always thought the ribbed ones were not from GM,even as I had a ribbed set on the shelf that I bought from GM.I was surprised, but that`s the facts as they happened.I guess GM had more done or the maker started using ribbed at some point.I think the rubber pads are one size fits all on many guards. What I don`t understand is,I bought guards for an`84 (from Chevy) in`89 and they were smooth.

Okay, I'm jealous, those are nice.
You've been spending some green lately, you better put the credit card in the fridge to cool that sucker off.

Yeah, my son's in public school now. That frees up about $1,000/month. I can't believe how much private school is for little kids. I say put it into parts.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
A guy on Ebay (Roger Koop) that restores these bumper guards has informed me that "The early units were smooth but late in 1972 they came with the ribs on the pad. I still have an NOS set from GM that I purchased in 1972 which have the ribs on them. So it could have come both ways." Most of us believe that smooth is oem and ribbed is aftermarket. I guess that may not be 100% correct. I'm still not sure, though.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
Yeah, been spending a lot lately, it's an early Christmas for me. Today, I just picked up a set of five oem 6 lug ralley rims for only $30 from a shop in Alpine, CA. No rust, just need a new coat of paint. Even included one open center cap.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
I wonder what Roger Koop would say about why the 81-87 style guards have smooth rubber.I`ve seen later model guards both ways.My hypothesis is that they were sourced from different vendors and has nothing to do with time line.If I`m wrong,I wonder how there were smooth, then ribbed, then smooth or ribbed again.Maybe the company that stamps outsources the rubber strips from more than one place.

Re: NOS 69-72 Bumper Guards
seems to me both are/could be NOS/GM..... you can compare this to condom's also ...
some prefer smooth and some prefer ribbed, whichever makes you feel the best !!!! |
