Ok here what I have

1971 4 speed 4x4 truck with the booster going into a 70 automatic truck w/ drum/drum

1) is there a way to test the Booster before the install..Looks a bit rough??
2) do I need the peddle from the 71?
3) can I reuse my porportioning valve from the 70?

the 71 parts truck is going to the recyle yard first of the week so I would like to get all the parts before it goes

I've never tried to test one off the vehicle exept to make sure it holds vacuum. Attach a hose to the engine or other tester and see if it holds.

thanx I was going to try that ..I just don't want to go though the BS of cleaing and painting Junk...what about the peddle?? I thought I read something about needing to drill a new hole???

the booster set up I have has the rocker between the peddle rod and booster...not sure if they are all like that or not??

1.Pull a vacuum on it and see if it loses vacuum after a couple minutes.If not it "should" be OK.
2.Unsure.
3.IIRC the prop valve is different.
Also I believe the bracket with the "rocker" is 4X4 specific.I haven't seen one on a 2X but that doesn't mean it wont work.

If you hook vacuum to it, the rod should push in and out easy. If it does not it is bad also. You need to use the 70 por. valve. You do not even have to brake any of the brake system down. Just unbolt the master from the firewall and pull it out. Then bolt up booster and brakets to firewall, them bolt the master to the booster. Make sure you get the rod that goes to the brake pedal. You have to have that off a power brake truck.

that works out well the master on the booster is ..well..junk I did take the rod but wasn't sure if my stock manual peddle has the correct hole for it??

Panel its what I could get my hands on cheap this may work out later if I ever do a caddi tans plant ...

ok one more??

is it unreasonable to think I could do this in an hour?? I took the old one out in 20 min??

my plan is this

pull old peddle bolt for the rod out...
loosen stock manual master ...
put the line streachers on it ( it this could be an issue I need to look)
insert booster ass. tighten down the 5 bolts....
put the peddle rod bolt back in and
mount the stock master back to the booster...
hook up a vacum line and run it...being sure not to back out of the garage at mach 3 before relizing they don't work and running into the stone wall...lmao (you had to be there)

If you had all the parts and all the correct linkages etc., and you didn't wind up with a bad booster then 1 hr. would be reasonable.

However, in my 50+ years of working with anything mechanical, murphy always has a way of getting involved. Just be prepared for it.

Be sure and use all of the parts including the brake pedal link. The mechanical link is shorter than the power brake one.

rod from the pedal to the booster is different. the manual setup the rod pushes directly into the master cylinder. on the booster there is a rod with a hole in the end to pin to the bracket/actuatorof the booster...doing the same thing today...i need the rod that mates to the booster....did not get that on the strip down prior to scrapping the last cab...good luckk...s.

I recommend getting the brake pedal too just in case. I think I remember that the rod location is a different distance from the pedal pivot on power brake trucks.

I thought that too?? thats why I asked....

today I took the booster off the mount assembly today I think the booster is FUBAR the rod that goes from the booster to the MC looks pretty crappy ...do the rods come out of the booster?? it seems like both rods are stuck in the booster...I don't want to reef on them if they arn't suppose to come out??...I think a booster is going to be in order...

Pedals are the same. Don't bother. I did an FAQ on this a few years ago. I will see if I can dig it up.

I may or may not know what I'm talking about here, but I seem to remember that the Delco- Morraine and Bendix boosters use different master cylinder pushrods that don't interchange without "making" a pushrod.

Bottom line is, IIRC, you can't use a 71-72 booster on a 70 & older MC or vise- versa without making a pushrod.

Be sure to look at them closely then let me know if I'm crazy

one question I can't seem to get an answer on is do the rods pull out of the booster?? the ones that are in my booster are looking pretty rough..I want to pull them out but I'm afaid that a new booster is in order??? maye I should order the new one and rape the parts I need?? then clean them up......

Yes, the pushrods come out. They're held pretty tight by a rubber bushing and it gets hard after so many years. Soak it with Armorall or similar and grab it with a pair of vise grips.

When you put it back in, you may have to smack it with a piece of wood and a hammer until it snaps back in. On the pic below, you can see the ball end that holds it in place.
