I picked up a 454 for my 71C20, and after I rebuild it I'd like to mate it to a 700r4. I would like to keep the column shift. What have you guys done about that, and also the cross member?

so keep the colomb shift, it will work.

cut the cross member out and cut the upper wings off of it. install your motor and tranny and mount the trans to the cross member UNDER THE FRAME RAIL!!!! jack it up till it touches and square it up and mark your holes.

If you want to it look right with the column shift, i've seen a factory style indicator but for the o/d trans. Had drive, 3, 2, 1 instead of drive, l1, l2. I'm not sure where exactly you could get that. But it will work with the column

I don't much care about the indicator, but will the stock column work with no problems?

Now on the crossmember-yeah, I'm not putting anything below the frame. I'll fab one up before I do that. Has anyone else done this swap?

I did one a few years ago in a 63 with a big block & with some slight modifications the linkage worked fine. I didn't have a lockout position for 1st gear though. Seems like I just moved the crossmember back a little. It already had an auto. trans. in it. I put one in the 70 that I drive now. It has a small block. The linkage on it even gives me 1st gear position.

why would you run the crossmember beneath the frame? Is it not supposed to clear otherwise?

It always cleared for me. I just move it back and drill new holes.

I wouldn't because I don't like anything below my frame, as I plan on being pretty low. Also I don't like the idea of cutting the upper portion of the crossmember off, because the crossmember strengthens the frame and I don't want to weaken it.

so it is easy to drill and mark your holes, when you are done you put it back on the inside of the frame.
