i have a shot at getting a big block out of a c40 for 300 bucks

does anyone know what size it might be its in a 67-68 because it has the small back window so it cant be a 454 right? and did they have the 366 that far back or would it be a 427?

Most likely a 366 and not a real good motor. It was a truck motor but not good for performance.I had one in my 66 C50

I agree, likely a 366, which is a tall deck engine with little bores.

The small back window thing doesn't mean anything on big trucks either. They used small windows way up into the 80s on heavies.

I don't think a 427 was offered in the C40, maybe not even the C50. I think you had to step up to a C60.

But I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time

I've heard the 427 truck engines are really torquey (?) motors. In terms of overall performance, are they worth using? Or would someone be better off with just a good ol' 396 or 454?

Even if it's a 427, it's probably a tall deck block. Find yourself a 454.

The 67 C40 6 wheel dump I drove had a 348. My 70 Box truck had a small block. Depends on what body it had. On or off road and GVW

348 wouldn't have been original if I'm not mistaken.
The 427 would indeed be a tall deck... but the steel crank is worth a couple bucks, and then there's some people wou atill think a 40 year old block is a good idea for a 500+ cube 'mountain motor'.
I wouldn't use it if it was ready to stab in my truck. I'd use it to make money then grab a big block that is worthey.

As I remember now it was a 60 or 61 truck. 67 is 366 or 327

From what I have been reading a 366 and 427 Truck motors are just that Great truck motors... I am seriously thinkng about a 427 in my 3x4 4x4 build i am planning. It will never see the far side of 4500 Rpm and rock solid internals... remember these things hauled huge amoutns of weight over the road for many years... i will probably do a close to stock rebuild and drive the he** out of it... depends on what you want, if you went 366 you could prolly score a nice running engine for 50-100 dollars cuz no one wants them... throw it under your hood and brag up as a big block

At 4:37, our tall deck that isn't "worthy" comes on the track for a 8,600 rpm 1st place run. Nothing very trick about it, it still has iron heads and steel rods. Over 40 hooks on it this year with nothing more than an oil change and 2 valve adjustments.

My ownership consists of sweat equity, a 1 ton frame I had, and about $300 I spent on doors and a hood scoop

It's kind of tough to say what my partner has in the engine dollar wise. It came with a truck he traded another truck for. The engine was built by a reputable shop 2 years ago, and came with the parts specs. Carb to pan would have to be at least 15K based on that. Looking at it that way, a tall deck isn't a good choice for an affordable street engine.

I don't have 2,500 in the engines of my 3 trucks combined. CSOB club member here for sure

you can get 1500 horses out of a quad 4, but it isn't cost effective.
