Re: chevy 396

For that price i wouldn't worry about gas mileage, i would get it. You might get 10 -15 mpg depending...

i agree. at that price, it dosent matter. but it depends on if the engine is mainly stock, or as he upgraded several things? what size carb you run, etc, so on and so forth

Plan on two gallons every day. $7 / day, $50 / week. $200 / month.

If you get better than that - great.

Re: chevy 396

I've done everything I can to get the best gas mileage from my 350 and the best I get is about 11-12 MPG. I really don't think you'll get much worse that that with a 396 if you drive it with a light foot. Plus you have to consider that people want our trucks with big blocks, which will be a big plus when and if you ever go to sell it.

Re: chevy 396

I get 12 MPG out of my 402 (city and highway combo) with a roller cam, a 60's Vet hi rise intake, HEI and an 800 Q-Jet. I also have a 700R4 and 3:73 gears with 31" tall tires.

If you have the room to store it, it's worth $200 even if you don't use it right off.

Re: chevy 396

BUY IT!!!! If nothing else put it on a stand and store it till you have to have it or rebuild it over time, or resell it and make some money... Either way thats a smokin deal if the motor is good... unless you have highway gears and / or 2 barrel carbs there not going to be a huge big difference in gas mileage, maybe 5 to 7 miles different.

Remind him of the cost of rebuilding a 350 if / when something goes wrong withthe one you have now... You could buy alot of gas for the cost for a rebuilt 350 vs that 396....
BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT
