Low Mount Alternator Bracket
The alternator bolt snapped off in the head while driving. Lucky for me, there was enough of a shard on the bolt that I could turn it out (very slowly) by hand.
I guess I have to address this issue, the PO had a strange set up with parts that could not have been stock. See first picture. All I seem to find as a replacement are the chrome lower mount SBC, SWP brackets. It doesn't look like you have much adjustment with these. Is anyone using them? What did the stock brackets look like? Thanks

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
Correct me if I'm wrong but you don't have the 2 holes in the front of the head for the stock alternator bracket, guess that's why you have the funky setup you have.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
That's what I see also no bolt holes in the head to do it with.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
Yes-All I've got are the two bolt holes below the water pump on the driver's side. Still wondering if the stock position was low (like I have) or some other bracket that attached to the intake manifold.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
That low mount concoction was not the original setup. I believe the correct alternator mount was a bracket bolted to the exhaust manifold on the pre 69 engines. It wasn't until 69 or so that the heads came with accessory holes in them.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
A long time ago I ran that chrome lower bracket for the alternator.
It was more trouble than it was worth so I pitched it, and went back to the OEM style bracketry.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
go to a salvage yard. get a alt. bracket from a older buick v6 . it will bolt up to the 2 holes on the block in front of the fuel pump.you will have to come up with a top adj. bracket piece.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
I think you may be in for some hassle... Since it looks like your driver side exhaust manifold doesn't have a mounting boss on it.
Here is how mine is set up. Notice the shape of the upper adjuster braket, this one is the one the worked best for me. I went through many ebay purchases of different style upper brakets, only to find they didn't have the best arc to adjust the alternater with my lower braket set up.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
Vectorit-Thanks for the beautiful pix. I think I have a cannibalized version of your set up. The adjusting hockey stick looks the same. Also, the s-shaped bracket that I have looks similar to the one on your exhaust manifold. Are two holes on the exhaust manifold required for your setup (alternator pivot goes all the way through or just into the bracket)?
I wonder if there is a modification. WHY IS THIS SO COMPLICATED!!!! I'm missing out driving my truck on these great days. Winter is coming soon. Thanks again for the pictures. I'd still like to see anyone else's setup especially on a '67 283.

Re: Low Mount Alternator Bracket
I'd see about getting a ram exhaust manifold for the driver side with the alternator mounting boss, then you could set up the brackets like how mine are. The lower you can get anywhere, and the upper you may have to search a little bit. But at least you will be on the right track, and be back on the road more reliably sooner.
