pressing out bushings
I just got back from the machine shop and they told me about $20 a control arm to push out the old bushings and press in the new, does this sound right? I figured just a couple bucks a piece. That is $10 a piece. getting expensive. and what about leaf springs, should I replace the bushings in those?

Re: pressing out bushings
How large is the press? I have pressed them out using a 20ton arbor press but broke the cheap cast plate on the cheap chinese made POS.
That price is kind of high but its hard to find shops still willing to do bench work these days. Try it and see if it works if not take them in or find s freind that has one. Someone you know has one I bet Actually that price IS a fair price these days. Last edited by mbgmike; 11-23-2009 at 10:55 AM. |

Re: pressing out bushings
It's a pain to do so I don't think their price is robbery or anything.
If you have a press you should be able to do it yourself. I have a cheap Chinese Northern Tool shop press and I do them.

Re: pressing out bushings
So it's $80 for all the CAs, plus another $20-30 for the leaf springs and you might as well have the ball joints replaced so figure another $20, so total is $120 at least. You might as well buy a 20/30 ton press for $100 and then some misc. jigs for it for another $20 then you have your own press.

Re: pressing out bushings
I ran into this same issue. Ended up buying a fully welded 20 ton press and made up some adapters to press in and out bushing. My Camaro control arms required that I make a new platform as the one on the press was too wide and I couldn't center the arms up. Bought some heavy gauge steel and built a new table. Works great but seriously heavy!!!
One tip, when doing control arms that are formed like a U and the bushing goes thru the two flat areas, cut a piece of angle iron to make as a support to go on the inside of the flats, up against the bushing. This way, when you press them out and back in, you don't collapse the arm.
