Will a shroud for a 4x4 bolt up to a non 4x4 radiator?
My 350 engine is set back in the 6 cyl location and I am trying to get the shroud closer to the fan.
I hear that in a 4x4 the engine was set back in the 6 cyl location so I need a 4x4 shroud?
or can you buy spacers for the fan?

Don't know about the shroud, but you can get fan spacers. Try Summit.

Sounds like you need to fab something up.
If you get two shrouds you could mate the two for double the lenght

From what Ive heard, the 4x4 shroud is exactly what you need. I just havent dropped the money to do it myself yet.

I am going to have a 72 4x4 Jimmy in my shop tomorrow and I will report back to you about the shroud. The thing to remember about fan shrouds is that the fan must be positioned about halfway in the shroud and halfway out of the shroud. This allows the fan to pull the maximum amount of air through the shroud. If the fan is too deep in the shroud it cavitates the air in the shroud. If it is too far out of the shroud, it will pull some air around the shroud, and not through it. I have repaired many overheating problems, especially with big blocks, by positioning the fan correctly in the shroud.

From pictures that I have seen in parts catalogues, the 4x4 shroud is very different than the standard shroud and will not work unfortunately

So the fan pulls the air in and does not push it out the front, I guess that makes sense,but news to me!

I put a 350 in my '69 in the six cylinder location. I ordered a fan shroud part number 32-2820 from LMC for about $70. My fan sits about half in and half out of the shroud. I had to trim about 3" off the top because the blades were real close at that point. It was a straight bolt in and does what it is suppose to do. Hope this helps..

Yes, the shrouds are bolted up the same on the rad. mounts and core support. I just changed out my 4x4 shroud for a 2WD shroud, so I can mount up a chrysler/jeep electric fan, fits exactly in the hole

I just used an angle grinder. Didn't have to take much off. About a 1/2" wide and 3" long. Hope this helps. Tony D.

My set up is the same as yours, 69 truck with a 350 in the 6 cyl spot.
Did you have a long or short water pump and do you have a spacer behind the fan?

Long pump with a 2" spacer. Turned out good. I was having a cooling problem due to the distance between fan and radiator. I keep reading articles on here, ordered what I have and it has worked well. These guys on here are awealth of info and will share ideas and lessons learned. Good Luck and hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving and holiday season..

Yea, the engine sits back approx. 3" closer to the firewall on the 4x4 trucks....So you're gonna need a new shroud !

You can use a 2WD shroud in a 4X4, especially if you use the electric fan outta the Chrysler/Jeep

Thanks for the advice. I just installed the shroud you suggested and it fits perfect and the fan is half in and half out as it should be

jaro44sr - I'm going to be doing the chrysler/jeeep e-fan install as well, will it work with the 4x4 shroud? I didn't see any reference to that in 71Rat's FAQ page.

Hi Tony, I have a 1968 c-10. My 350 engine also sits were the six cy. sits. I was having an over heating problem..I had a aftermarket electric fan as well as a clutch type fan. The fan was too fsr back from the radiator. I took out the clutch fan and now run the two fan aftermarket assembly. was this the right thing to do ?. I do not have a shroud on my radiator. my electric fan is on a on/off switch, not a thermostat switch. I f iforget to turn on the electric heat my truck can overheat at idle, also after i shut down my truck i sometimes have to leave the electric fan on for up to 20 minutes to bring down the engine temp. Anyone have any suggestions ? Was this method the best choice for my truck ?. thank you

Yes, I've installed the fan in both shrouds with equally good results. I ran a 1/4" strip of insulation before installing the fan

Good idea on the insulation. I'm actually attempting to mount the fan without drilling or cutting my shroud. We'll see how it goes...

More to do tomorrow, but just putting the fan in the shroud without bolting it in seems very secure. When I cut the tabs I left a bit to make it snug and tight. I may use different brackets in place of the silver ones, maybe one that will hook over the edge of the fan for extra protection.

I was just scanning some other posts and found some saying the fan blades need to be half-in, half-out of the shroud. Is that for the stock fan? Should this be mounted at the back edge of the shroud?
Looks as if everybody that posted pics of their mopar e-fans has them dropped in a few inches.
