Heater cables

I'm hooking up my heater cables on a '72 w/o ac........Having a problem with the center cable with the fan switch on it. What is the cable operating in the heater box besides the fan switch. It seems too long and under a lot of stress...so i'm just leaving the cable unhooked and going to do it manually . Just using it for the fan !

Re: Heater cables

I didn't open the shop manual but I was under there this weekend. As near as I can tell, the far end of the cable is opening a door just downstream of the blower fan. Higher fan speed = less restriction in the flow.

Are you running the cable behind the air box? Mine runs to the driver's side of the passenger defrost nipple, to the firewall, then comes back out right at the mounting point.

A cold chisel and a piece of railroad iron does a good job of opening up the clip that's swaged onto the outer cable. After opening the clip, screw it down and let the cable find where it wants to ride. Pull the clip off, give it a couple of good shots with the chisel and you should be ready to go.

Re: Heater cables

You'll see a lot of the heater controls with bolts through the face so the rivets don't pop out from the tension on that center cable. You are smart to just leave it disconnected and just use the center lever for the fan.

Also, it is opening the main "door" that controls the total quantity of air coming in to the cab. I just kept mine wide open all the time. Just use the bottom lever to control how much if any heat you want, and the top one to switch between the floor and defroster vents.
