Re: Whats NEW?

As is the case with any classic car/truck builder......what ever you like! No offense to anyone, but trying to follow a trend or fad is for posers. Research what the good folks on this board have done, go to a few shows, read some mags and from that plethora of information come to your own conclusion as to what you want to do.
Nonetheless the two most prevalent fads seems to be the layin' frame on 22's or 24's and the retro inspired "shop truck" thing. I, personally am going towards the "G-Machine" or "Pro-Touring" angle.....sufficeint HP, but killer handling and brakes.

Re: Whats NEW?

Tis true lolife99...

I think the latest trends are still being developed by those who love these trucks. I've seen one-off builds, to custom classics, to classic customs; it's all in the eye of the beholder and their wallet.

Re: Whats NEW?

Seems that custom suspension with large wheels is the going thing. I am going with front and rear drop members with a 20/22 wheel combo from Coy's. Nate has the market cornered with the drop member stuff. These trucks look good no matter what your taste, but to me the only way to have it is laying frame.

Re: Whats NEW?

Latest trend seems to be cutting up a nice shortbed truck for monster notches in the rear, gutting the bed floor, then running out of money and not really finishing anything.

Re: Whats NEW?

Consensus I am seeing here is you can't beat an original restoration. The old timers eat it up, and the young guys get to see what these trucks really looked like.

Kinda like all the 60's-early 70's Camaros, Novas, Chevelles, SS cars, Z28's, etc,... that were turned into dirt cars and drag cars to run in the stock classes back in the 80's. What a waste. Kinda like the Pro Street trend. Another waste.
Guess it made my '67 RS Camaro worth more. Oops,... it 's a Pro Street car from the late 80's.
Let the cutting begin!

Re: Whats NEW?

Rodsterations ... where the truck stays mostly stock except maybe a beefed up engine, better brakes, maybe lower a little ... Just food for thought.

Re: Whats NEW?

The 70's baby. Slot mags, psychadelic paint, metal flake, shag carpet, fuzzy anything. Or, you can be smart and restore exterior to bone stock, upgrade drivetrain, brakes and suspension, mild drop with some classy rims that are not too small and not too big and build a comfortable interior with ice cold A/C. This kind a build will stand the test of time and retain its value.

Re: Whats NEW?

This subject is actually a very good one.

My build is right down McClairmos road to the tee.

Reallity is though, that we wouldn't have all these great parts to play with if the slam and chop bunch weren't out there doing their thing also.

I think a recent thread by Big Al sums it up. The better twin thread. Just look at the amount of guy's that would rather have his truck.

There's always going to be a crowd that likes the pro tour/slammed look and us the other crowd, ie the old school bunch.

Each one is awesome as long as they're doing something with old American iron.

It's ALL good.

Re: Whats NEW?

Yeah, I built my 67 Camaro in the 90's and blacked out all the chrome for that Euro look. I was soooo stupid. I have spent the last 10 years putting all the oem chrome trim back on it. The exterior is now basically stock and it looks awesome. Nobody can really complain about the way GM designed these vehicles. However, if you mess with it, you risk making it worse. We all like the oem look, but we would all probably like updated internals and comfort.

Thank you!!!!! I am really surprised as how many people would prefer a build like mine over it's twin.....

Re: Whats NEW?

From my old perspective, it's all just a big circle. What's "new" today, was "neat" yesterday. Guy's would lower their "lead sleds" to the point of not being able to go to a particular drive-in because the speed bumps were too high, or the driveway was too steep.
Shop trucks were work trucks, just old beaters with a name on the door, today they're "in". Back in the day, "sleepers" were the thing to cruise in. They're back.
I guess what I'm saying is, "what goes 'round, comes 'round." If you don't particularly like a style, wait a year or two and it'll fade. The only trend that I've noticed that is constant, is the percentage of bone-stock restorations.
The single biggest improvement (?) is the availability of after-market parts. Used to be you had to scrounge parts from a bone-yard to create your one-of-a-kind ride. And that was part of the fun - the hunt. Then you had to engineer your parts and make it all come together. Today it's 1-800 and you've got your new parts. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I'm just suggesting that maybe this is where all of the diversity has come from.

I'll uh, get off my soap box now.
