No, it just has to be clearly visible from the front of the vehicle.

lol, funny pic

and from being pulled over like 10 times, both plates are supposed to be on the very front portion of the truck, and the very rear portion, which is both bumpers. well, at least not in the front window.

I'm fully aware and I carry the plate between the seat cushions if I have to toss it on the dash, but the only officer to ever care was my diligent school cop in highschool. I drove my Firebird for nearly a year with out one, even after being pulled over by a state trooper who saw that it wasn't there, and didn't say anything or ticket it. And the truck has been front-platless for a few months now, again to no worry from the law.

My dad has almost never ran a front plate on his cars over the years, except for the boring family wagons. His reasoning is "Well, if I'm going to run from the police I sure won't be doing it in reverse."

Though I don't really care to make this a debate about TX plate laws, boys in blue have bigger things to worry about. Thread is about a humorous photo of a truck with RUN FORREST RUN on the bumper chasing small children on the sidewalk.

Very nice. Here in SoCal I have gotten two fix it tickets in my life for no front plate. I hate them, too, but you gotta run one unfortunately.

Well aren't you getting upset here ?

Lots of my friends are cops. They actually do not have bigger things to worry about. A missing plate is their perfect excuse to pull you over. Then they get to sniff inside of your truck, run your license for warrants and check your insurance. What a hassle.

A cops theory is that he can't smell weed or find someone with a warrant without pulling them over first.

Actually, my buddies had hot boxed my one buddy's 66 Mustang so badly that the cop literally could smell it while following them and could also see the smoke inside. Was like a Cheech and Chong movie. The cop pulled them over but let them go with a warning since they were actually "good college kids", whatever that means. Tx Firefighter is right, though. They will pull you over so as to search you. My old GF got pulled over once and was looking for her proof of insurance in the trunk and the cop stuck his nose in there looking for anything illegal. Cops know that kids hide drugs wherever and are looking for that. That's why they often ask to search your car. If they do not have probable cause, they have to get permission. However, if you politely say you are in a rush and cannot wait for them to do a search, then they have to let you go. However, they will likely just say that your refusal to let them search made you suspicious, which gives them the probable cause they need to search without your permission. Basically, you are screwed no matter what. Just don't do anything illegal.

Re: So... I got a new front license plate. Had to test it out.

I was riding my motorcycle behind a pick up one day, and I could smell the herbal smoke coming from it while doin around 30mph. I pulled up next to him and waved a naughty finger at him and smiled, he then imediately turned off onto another street.

I totally agree that it just gives the LEO the excuse to pull you over and check to make sure you are on the up and up, since a long time ago I refused to put them on. After a few fix it tickets, I run that front plate all the time now. Who needs the hassle anyways.

Cops are cops, who really cares. I've been pulled over for the rear license plate light being out when it really wasn't . Texanidiot, I think the picture is funny regardless of the lack of a front plate.

The legal standard is actually from a case called People v. Terry where the Supreme Court upheld a stop and search based upon "reasonable suspicion" and not the more stringent "probable cause."

Reasonable suspicion is much easier for a cop to obtain. For example, they can ask you "what are you doing in this neighborhood?" A failure to have a good answer will meet the test.

Once they have reasonable suspicion, they can instruct you to exit the vehicle. They can then search the vehicle and contents that are "within custody and control of the driver". This means that your bags, boxes and other contents in the cab of the truck are fair game. The glove box and under the seat. In the case of a truck, the rear cargo area is generally off limits in a Terry stop because it is not considered in the drivers custody and control. The best spot to stash your stash is in a locked box in the bed (or a trunk).

NEVER CONSENT TO A SEARCH OF YOUR VEHICLE I don't care if you are not comiting any crimes. The constitution should not be waived because some cop asked. If they give you the old "what do you have to hide?" Respond by politely saying "nothing, I just make it a practice to not waive my constitutional rights, Officer."

This is how I toke this thread as well, very funny and in very good taste.

WHY in the world would you just want to turn somethint that by all counts is SUPPOSE to be funny into a debate about legal Texas plate laws?

Just enjoy the fun side for a while.

As texanidiot CLEARLY understand the legal side of this arugement.

Good Job texanidiot for bringing some entertaining humor to the site!

Bravo!!

I suppose you could run antique vehicle tags then you dont have to run a front plate or get it inspected. But the limitations of when you can drive it really stink.

Well aren't you getting a little preachy here?

You totally missed the point of the thread to begin with. I explained my position on the matter quite clearly in the post above to shunt any further arguments, as noted in the last line. But seems that you and others have missed the point. Might as well go into a burn out thread and change the topic to the legalities of burnouts. Of course, that would also be missing the point of the original post entirely.

To the guys talking about search rights- Fully aware of those too. Never have had to use them and don't smoke anything to worry about it.
