Need help with steering gearbox
Last week my gear box started leaking. so i looked around and bought a rebuilt one from the local napa for around $140 with an $80 core. Now onto the problem, I put it in today but now the truck feels like it has no power steering at all i open the pressure line going into the gearbox and it shoots out fluid. i open the return line and also fluid shoots out. what am i forgetting to do? i lifted up the front end and turn the wheel both sides check fluid level and its full. but once i put it back on the ground its hard to turn. Anybody have any suggestions?

Re: Need help with steering gearbox
If your other box worked and now the new one doesn't after bleeding then you may have a bad box.
Is the new box noisy? Sometimes it is hard to get all of the air out. Jim

Re: Need help with steering gearbox
how do i know if the power steering pump is circulating the fluid? is it like the radiator where you can see the fluid circulating?

You reservoir should not be full after install and turning the wheels Did you bleed it correctly? I would replace all hoses and fluid also when doing this. Probably needs it anyway unless you know the last time it was done. Jack the truck up with the tires off the ground. turn wheel all the way to left fill the reservoir to full cold. don't start truck. T Turn the fwheel back and forth until the level drops. If it does not drop nothing is happening. and air is in the system. Untill its out its not going to work Turn wheel slow NOT fast to allow air out do this until the level drops and does not drop anymore. Now pull the coil wire. crank the engine until you see if the level drops if it does there is still air. check for foaming too. If so go have a beer and wait 15 minute or whatever come back and do it again till there is none. If it still does not work its probably bad. or the piston is stuck inside. Re: Need help with steering gearbox
I had a similar problem after replacement of the gear box. That may be worth trying. remove the pressure line from the pump. Then remove the fitting. There is a very small screen there. Clean that screen. It doesn't take much too interfer with proper pressure. Then rebleed the system as others have suggested. This may solve your apparent lack of pressure in your gearbox and is easier than replacement of the gearbox. Good Luck.

Re: Need help with steering gearbox
your saying take the pressure line out of the power steering pump not the gearbox? and clean the screen correct? both hoses have been replaced about 4 months ago when i replaced the power steering pump. and as far as the fluid it the reservoir was completely dry when i replaced the leaking gearbox and is there a way to get the piston unstuck?

Re: Need help with steering gearbox
ok problem fixed now. thanks to everyones reply. but the old man took one look and told me the power steering belt wasn't tight enough. i had a feeling i overlooked something. when i was turning the wheel you could see the puley of the powersteering pump just stop i tightened up and now its smooth. in case some one else runs into this problem.
