Question Carb issues - accelerator pump?

So, I get some backfiring when I try to gve it more throttle quickly. It also helps if I pump the gas pedal progressively as I'm giving it more gas (like stairs). how would I confirm that it is the accel pump and not a vac leak? How do I cnfirm my carb? It is a California 72 with 350v8... Also, how do icheck if it is a th400 vs th350 turbo- hydromatic?

Can't help with the carb issue, but you can I.D. the transmission by the shape of the pan. http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-transm...tification.php

Re: Carb issues - accelerator pump?

You can give the accelerator pump a quick visual check with a small flashlight.

Take the breather off the carb, run the truck for a minute or so -running it will insure you have a full bowl and the gas hasn't leaked out -then look in the throat as you manually move the throttle. You should see a good stream of gas squirting out. If it's real weak or if you don't see any, then the pump is supect or the float adjustment.
