6.0 LS questions

I have a buddy who owns a construction company that rolled one of their work trucks. I am not sure on the exact year but I would say 04-07. It has the 6.0 motor with auto tranny.

I know I have read pros and cons to different intake configurations etc. What is everyones opinions on using this motor in one of our trucks if we want to make power. I think the truck motors are the ones that do not fit quite well.

Is this correct?

I think the best upgrade for the LS motors to make good power are a nice cam upgrade and the L92 heads and intake upgrade. The L92 heads are the rectangular port heads instead of the cathedral port heads. L92 heads are the equivalent of the LS3 Vette heads. And the truck motors fit perfect because our trucks have such a large engine bay. The truck motors have the taller intake which still fits, but many guys like myself switch to the car(Vette or GTO) intakes.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

Power wise you'll be ahead of a stock SBC or BBC out of the box. The 6.0L can make more than 450 RWHP N/A.

DO IT!!!

Re: 6.0 LS questions

From what I have heard and read is that the truck intake has better torque which would be better for street use? I was lucky enough to buy a complete LQ9 6 liter which has those heads and 1/2 point lower compressin alowing lower octane (cheaper) gas. The LQ9 has 345 hp and 380 ft lbs of torque. According to John Spear with his harness and reprogramed pcm and using no converters and down stream o2 sensors you gain an additional 10-15hp and 10 ft lbs of torque with a free flowing 21/2 inch exhaust.

You are correct that the truck intake has more torque because it is taller. Hence, taller runners for more air intake. I bought both of my LS harnesses and ECU's from John at Speartech. He is a very knowledgeable person and knows his stuff. I advise anyone doing an LS swap and needs an ECM or a harness to give Speartech a call. Lastly, the LQ9 is capable of more HP & torque than that if you do a mild cam upgrade.

If the Truck intake is to tall how are you guys running them? I was originally thinking of finding a 06 GTO motor and tranny but have seen a couple at very high prices.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

The truck intake manifolds fit in our trucks no problem.

The 06 GTOs have 6.0L LS2 (aluminum block) and are more expensive than a truck 6.0L.

Ive priced out a few different options but no solid answers yet. Im not one to update a truck with newer stuff as I like being able to work on it better. However it seems that once you get rid of all the outside parameters on these motors that they are fairly simple.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

So Car Craft has done comparison on heads on a stroked 6.0l in the last issue. They show that stock 6.0l heads make good hp and torque. The truck intake will fit and make more torque than the ls1 or ls6 intake. The biggest draw for those is the look. The GTO engine is a lot more money because of its a LS6 or LS3 I believe. In doing tons of research on this engine swap I have found that the 6.0l w a nice cam swap is the way to go for sure. Do not worry about a different intake unless looks are what you are going for. There is tons of info on LS1tech.com on this subject. Lots of guts are making near 500 rwhp on 6.0l w bolt-ons. That is what I would do if I was you then if wanting more power bolt up a t60-70 turbo for more fun, say 580+ rwhp. Good luck and dont let that parts truck get away from you it would be a great swap to do and easier than you might think. Good luck

You could use an LQ4 too. These links are about a budget 5.3 install, but could just as easily be a 6.0.

Read my post above yours. Notice I said, "The truck motors have the taller intake which still fits.". I didn't say it was so tall that it wouldn't fit. To be honest, the truck intake fits and still has a little bit more room. That's why I emphasized our trucks have large engine bays and said it fits perfect.

My sentiments exactly. That's why I said in an earlier post about doing a cam upgrade and a 6.0 is killer. Another thing to be aware of guys. The 6.0 iron block vs the 6.2 aluminum block. Don't get caught up in the cubes. The 6.0 is a far superior block for many reasons. But I'll give two of the most important. (1) The iron block is far stronger and can handle all the torque and horsepower you throw at it. And the most important, (2) Aluminum cannot be bored out. Therefore when it is time to rebuild it if you break it, guess what...you got to buy a new block. And we all know the aluminum block cost an arm and a leg. The iron block is reusuable.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

You can bore out an alluminum block. They still have steel sleeves in them. I'd just stick with the intake that's all ready on the motor. If you swap to a car style intake, you will also have to swap to car style accessories, thus, added cost.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that. I cut my sentence short. You are right you can bore aluminum, but not as easily. It can only be bored maybe .010 over. Anything past that is isn't good. Then if it needs to go past that you have the other alternative of re-sleeving the block which is more money. All that to say, it is for more advantagous to just go with the iron block.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

Theree isn't alot of advantages of using the LS6 intake until the higher RPM's. If you have a truck engine you have to change all of your accessories over to vette stuff too, which to me is alot to do for little gain.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

I also thought that with a street driven truck High RPM operation was not a priority. On the street stop light to stop light and off ranp acceleration would be more desirable. Besides what I have came with the motor and fits and works fine. As far as appearanc The LQ9 comes with three piece full engine covers.

No, not the LS6 intake, the LS3. The LS6 is your standard cathedral port intake. The LS3 or L92 is rectangular port. Therefore, bigger ports...more airflow.

Stop light to stop light or not, we all know, we as men want a good motor with good, decent horsepower and torque. All the intake is providing is proper airflow for the most part. Higher RPM's vs lower RPM's, etc should be taken into consideration when picking the operating range on your cam. That's a factor whether doing an LS or just a SBC or BBC motor. Don't go out and put a cam in your motor if it is street driven with an operating range of...let's say 3000-8000. That's when regular street driving opposed to higher RPM comes into account. A street driven truck with good horsepower & torque should maybe use a cam with an operating range of 1800-6500 or 2000-7000. These are just examples and there a thousands of variables to figure out. I'm no expert just my .02 cents.

You will have to use adapter plates. Unless you have a Dropmember which is supplied with the correct motor mounts. You can get the LS adapter plates anywhere. Just google "LS1 adapter plates." I got mine from Street & Performance.

Re: 6.0 LS questions

I got my engine mounts and trans cross member from preformance online and for the adapter plates I used the template from ls1.com in the FAQ part of conversions and hybrids heading. then just took that to a fab shop and got them made up.
