Remove AC in S10 for 53GMC

hey everyone.....

I have a question for those of you that are familiar with a 1996 S10 stock parts...

The big, radiator shaped like part in front of the radiator is the air conditioner condenser... Correct?

The transmission cooler is built into the stock radiator...correct?

If I wanted to remove A/C from my 1996 S10 for my 1953 GMC project, what steps would I take?

Thank you for your help!

you would need the condensor and the complete case and all the lines and pressure switches plus the dash controls and vacuum lines. you also need the complete inside case, you would have to make sure the lines are long enough to reach the condensor from the 53 firewall. also that condensor is pretty wide, not sure it will fit. aftermarket is a much easier option and for a kit without the compressor it will be around a $1000 well worth it in my opinion. good luck

When you do remove the AC unit from the S10 I would suggest you leave it completely in tact. You don't want to contaminate the system. So don't break any of the lines loose if you can help it. Granted when you begin to put it into your truck may have to disassemble it, but letting it sit contaminated in the mean time will probably ruin it completely.

so...what is the easiest way to remove it...the lines running to the air conditioning set up in the box cover can just be taken off and that will fix it? It won't cause some computer problems for my motor?

No, disconnecting your A/C lines then connection them to your 53 firewall (or wherever you put it) will do nothing to your computer. Lines might be under pressure so be careful. Also, the gases might be extremely cold. Just do what was mentioned above and cover the lines once remove. The last thing you want is failure due to contaminants. I'm not sure how much bigger the set-up is with A/C compared to non A/C. If you have the money, go for the high speed low drag unit. But, If you have a good running unit, and can fab something up to make it work. I'd go with the second option if I were you. It's by no means rocket science. Take pic's of the set-up before you remove it. Make some bracket's cut some firewall and have fun...and post a write up so I can copy your set-up. I'd love to have A/C!

Re: Remove AC in S10 for 53GMC

Thank you for your help sgtusmc! I will definietely put up a post about that when I get to that phase of putting in another AC unit. I love the heater set up you have in your truck but my huge box would simply not allow for both AC and heat....I can roll the windows down but i cannot FREEZE!

i took your advice you put in a post a while back and have been getting around to working on my truck more lately with my break from school.....

thanks again for your help...

You might want to give the environment a break and see if there is someone in your area that will recover the 134 instead of releasing it. They might even give you a credit towards recharging it. Just the old hippy in me surfacing I quess.
