HEI vs. Other type dizzy

Okay for the value the HEI can be a great distributor. But someone like me that does not like the bulky look of the HEI would rather have something like a MSD Pro Billet with an external box to go along with it.

Now having said that, which dizzy well performance better up to 6500RPMs? And still have a constant HOT spark?

Yes for the money the HEI is great. But I am talking about a high performance distributor that will perform from idle to upper RPMS and not fall off in doing so. Not sure if a stock HEI will do that, but some of the MSD ones will but the cost of these can be very expensive once you add the external box (Multiple Spark Discharge) to the equation.

Just need your thoughts and experience on this matter.

You can get the MSD ready to run small cap distributor for less than $250 and not need the external box. That is what I have in my Jimmy. But for a 2 wheel drive truck, I would run the big cap performance HEI which has a high output coil and a module with increased dwell. Jegs has theirs on sale right now for $99. Complete with cap and rotor. I was going to order one for my '86 K3500 dually, but had an offer from Eastwood with 15% off order and free shipping. This appears to be the same as the performance Jegs distributor and was $85. Any of these will have sufficient spark output to 6500 rpm. But it's your money...

Petronix in original dizzy for unbulky.But,as far as a better distributor goes?You`ll never see an improvement over the HEI unless you have one hella motor.GM got it right.Unless you just want another performance name to see under the hood the HEI is all the distributor you`ll ever need.There are spring and weight kits,as well as te mentioned modules,to enhance performance.But the HEI has got the volts.

Skipwhite Performance, HEI 65K volts, $49.99. I am one of many running theirs and it is still going strong shifting at 6500 RPM.

quite a few manuractures have small cap HEI with an external coil where you can maintain the original look with the modern performance advantages// i like the billet pertronix dizzy tho it is a bit on the pricy side

I'd recommend an MSD with a box and coil.

The MSD distributor has magnetic pick-ups; no points to float, and last practically forever.

The 6AL box has a variable rev limiter (change with replaceable plugs). The 6A box has no rev limiter. That will help keep your baby within it's useable RPM band, and prevent over-revving. The box, in conjunction with MSD coil will also give you a good hot spark all the way up to 6500.

MSD is not nearly as delicate as Mallory systems or HEI, and are available everywhere. Many shops will often have sales where you can the entire set up for under $250.

I've had a Petronix conversion in my mild 396 for over 15 years and no issues. Fits under the stock cap and the price is right.

I second (or third, or whatever are we up to now) the Pertronix, mine has worked flawlessly and you would be hard pressed to know it wasn't the stock dizzy.
