Need help re: 71 Blazer Engine Mounting

Pulled the 454 engine in my 1971 Blazer and got it rebuilt...problem is:::

i dropped it back in and mounted it up but the valve covers are too tight up against the firewall...just no way it could be right! not even room for some engine movement.

do the mounting brackets have a right and left side? could i have them backwards?

seems like it should be easy, the block and frame only have one set of holes?

lost...

What changed while it was out? Did you go with different valve covers, heads, etc?

The valve covers are probably a little taller/different.

New motor mounts? Something HAS to be different. It's probably something simple.
