71 gmc non tilt column question

hey guys i replaced my tilt column with a non tilt auto on the column and the thread on the end of the shaft by the steering wheel is a different size than the tilt one. does anybody know what size nut it takes to bolt the steering wheel on? this is after 2 trips to the hardware store with the wrong size nut. the tilt shaft was 1/2 inch and is too small for the non tilt column. i tried 9/16 fine thread but that was too big. any ideas?
