700r4 tranny lockup switch

Ok I have a 700r4 tranny on my 63 c10 off of a 89 rs camaro...I have been doing lots of reading and I am very confused!!!!some people say that on any 700r4 85 or new that there is no need for it to be hook up while others say that it needs to be hooked up regarless of the year or else you risk looosing your tranny.....Can some one please let me know what could happen if its not hooked up ?also is there a kit on the market today that will work with my 63 c10 since there is no computer to hook up the wires coming from the tranny to.thanks

Re: 700r4 tranny lockup switch

If you don't use a lock up, damage can happen to the transmission and converter, not counting your gas mileage will suffer.

I would suggest hooking it up if you have a lockup converter.

Re: 700r4 tranny lockup switch

the 700R4 requires a lockup switch or it will generate heat .hooking it up is simple. if you can get the one out of the car the trans came from it would be easier, if not buy one for the model the trans came from. there should be only one wire comming from the 700 , it hooks to the blade terminal on the lockup switch . the switch body needs to be grounded prefferably to the engine block . the hose port on the switch should be hooked to manifold vacuum

Sorry I miss read the year, the toggle would be a pain, I had a lockup switch stick and for some reason the trans govenor didn't kick it out. you may want to look at a camaro schematic and see it that helps

Re: 700r4 tranny lockup switch

i will have to find the article , but there is a way you can wire it up using a brake switch so that when you hit the brakes hit will kill the power to the tranny and unlock it. one of the articles i read the guy used and OD lighted switch from a car mounted on the dash to turn the OD on and then ran it through the brake switch.

ahh here ya go http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=334345

Re: 700r4 tranny lockup switch

I used the Bowtie Overdrive kit. It was made so the TV cable would work with my Edelbrock carb. (TV cable adjustment is important too) I also got the lockup wiring kit, easy to install and comes with a new brake switch to disengage the lockup. Not cheap but a quality product. Do a web search on them, lots of good info even if you don't buy their kit.

Re: 700r4 tranny lockup switch

Agreed on the BTO site they have some very good products but not cheap. I got my lockup kit from ebay for 45.00 and had to buy wire and fuse but it was very simple all I had to do was tap the servo cover and install pressure switch and wire up.

Try these guys out, I think they are local for you. "Hesperia, CA"
I talked to them at the GoodGuys show in nor-ca, about the samething. And they have a kit to replace it.

The kit you speak of is highly recommended by rodders in my area and is the one I am going to be using myself. Make sure you have a pro at the TV cable adjusting do the TV adjustments for you unless you know for sure what you are doing, that could be some of the reason you are having shifting problems.
