Paint color question

I have a 68' SWB I'm getting ready to do a motor/tranny swap on and want to repaint the automatic colum I will be putting in to replce my three on the tree. It and the steering wheel are that orange some interior parts were painted that year, mostly red trucks had that color interior although my truck is black. It's kind of a weird combo becuase they used the maroon (I think it's firethorn) on the door panels to match the dash pad and visors while the colum and wheel are this orange. Anyone know what the orange is called and/or a code?
Thanks

Re: Paint color question

Thank you, I have heard the exterior orange referred to by that name, but I wasn't aware that was the true name for the color or just a slang name. I appreciate your help!

Re: Paint color question

Hugger Orange is good for '69 and later. I have a '68 C/10 stepside that's 516 Orange ["Omaha Orange", "Sunbolt", "Tangerine"] Same paintcan -- different names each year from the Ad/marketing guys. Interior is the same as the outside paint, but some of the trim is "Fawn, Irredescent" [a silver-gold /grey metallic that the GM Fremont plant was fond of in '67 and '68.] The door panels, column, surround on the dash bezel, were Fawn, The vinyl seat was a matching fawn grey, as were the seatbelts and sunvisors.
Anyway 'Hugger' is a little more red than 'Omaha'.

Re: Paint color question

It sounds like you have a`69 with red interior, which is a maroon color. The only color I can think it would be is the bright red that came in`70-72 trim/vinyl color. The column paint is supposed to match the other trim, unless tilt.Is it possible it was painted by someone?I had a`69 with red interior, but it had a tilt column, which was black.

Re: Paint color question

No, it's definately a 68' and I bought it completely unmolseted with 92, 000 original miles about 19 years ago. It's the only factory black with red interior I have actually ever seen in person and surprisingly enough, it is a base model truck, still had the radio block out when I bought it. The seat was originally this bright orange vinyl as well before I recovered it in the maroon (firethorn) with black inserts. The orange is similar to chevy engine paint, but different.

Re: Paint color question

It definately is more of a reddish orange, not the omaha. I found something very similar at the this site under a 67' light red color. I need to check my VIN and see what month my truck was made, could be I have some leftover 67' year parts and/or paint colors? I know it happended with old Fords, did Chevy ever carry stuff over to the next year to use their stuff up?

Re: Paint color question

Alright, I found this website which helped a lot. 68orangesunshine I think you're right on with the 516 color by code on this site, but whenever I have seen the Omaha Orange color by name it seems more of a school bus or safety Orange with more yellow. I still cannot figure why my metal door panels are the dark red same as my dash pad and visors while my seat, colum, steering wheel, and visor brackets were all of this orange color. It's quite unique. Looks like they used the 516 in 67 and 69, the colors on this site aren't there for 68' but I would assume they were using it then as well. My darker red looks as though it is the 515 Vermillion red. Thanks for all of your help.

Re: Paint color question

my 69 gmc had the orginal hugger orange paint on the inside with maroon column, door panels, visers, glove box door, dash pad. the spid on the glove box door matched the vin plate.it was diffinetly orginal, the two colors really didnt go together imo.

Re: Paint color question

This page on our site will help you decode your VIN, but it won't tell you what month it was built. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html
There was originally a sticker under the latch on the door side in the drivers door, it'll give the year and month of build... if it is still there.

I think its light red DuPont code 544 just went through this on my truck what dose the tag say in the glove box? take a look at my truck and see if its the same orange red that I have. Also General Motors used that paint from 56-71.

Re: Paint color question

I once had a guy tell me, on this very forum, that Omaha Orange was a Ford color. Could be, I don't know a lot about Fords. I've had a couple, but nothing I wanted to keep. I once had a Tootsietoy [1/64th] cast iron fuel truck, that was that same Omaha Orange, when I was a toddler. "Omaha Orange" was the marketing label for that shade on the ADs and Task Force trucks, back in the '50s. In the late '60s GM just referred to it as 516 Orange. I've seen Fords, VWs, and Dodges in this same color.

Re: Paint color question

I think my '68 Stepside C/10 was originally a CalTrans truck. It had a radio delete plate, a ball bearing ashtray. L-25 292, 4-speed SM465, solid color w/Creamcicle white face grill, 7.00x17.5 rims, no power anything, and some suspicious holes on the inside of the cab going from under the dash, along the threshold plate and up the pass side B-pillar to the center of the roof to a rubber grommet in the exact center of the cab for a UHF 2-way In 41 years I never messed with that grommet and it still doesn't leak... Knock wood.
