pressing in bushings
So I am going try my hand at pressing in bushings in my control arms this weekend and I have been doing some reading on this and it looks like I need to notch three tabs into the lower bushings. is this true, and what is the best way to do this, screwdriver, punch? need some pointers. And just a be sure question, these bushings press from the outside in, is that correct? I had my others removed and forgot to take pictures

Re: pressing in bushings
it depends on what the bushings are made of. If these are the factory style rubber you need a press and some lube. Its also best to throw the bushing assembly in the freezer to shrink it. I use motor assembly lube or vaseline or astroglide/ky etc.
If its poly bushings a rubber hammer will get them in with a little lube. |

Re: pressing in bushings
they are poly I got two in one of the upper arms last night with a rubber mallet. the question isa the notches on the lower bushing sleeve. it looks like you take a screw driver and hammer and pound in three notches to keep the sleave from sliding out. And again wondering if the sleaves are pressed in from the outside of the control arm or the inside\
thanks Chris |

Re: pressing in bushings
This is one of those questions where you have done it before but can't quite remember the answer........... I "think" it is from the outside in, but I am not 100%.

Re: pressing in bushings
sleeves go in from the outside and may require a press. You may be able to use a steel tube and hammer the sleeve in. then press the bushing into the sleeve.
The sleeve has a raised spot where it will stop when its pressed in all the way. |

Re: pressing in bushings
I borrowed one of those C Clamp style balljoint tools, it is totally the way to go I got them all in tonight in about 1 hour with really now issues. just thinking about holding one of the control arms while using a press just sounds scary by myself. Just need to press in the ball joints tomorrow, so I have to run air into the house to use an impact on that clamp, not need to heat the garage for that little work
