I am leaking oil from the oil dipstick tube, where it plugs into the block.
I've tried some of the rtv ultra black to seal it up, but it's not working. I can just reach down and pull it right out of the block like it's barely in there.
In fact, when I pull on the dipstick to check the oil, it pulls the tube out of the block.

Pull it out, clean block and tube with brake clean and use JB weld.
Always works!

Take the dipstick and dent it a little with some vice grips. Clean it and the hole in the block with some laquer thinner. Try a Q-tip for the hole in the block. Put some RTV on it and stick it back in. Edit: We posted at the same time.

Buy your self a quality dipstick like the one from lokart and your problems will end.
I have gone thru stock dipsticks and the chrome from mr gasket then I switched to the lokar and it never happened again..

there's something to be said about a new tube from the dealer combined with a good cleaning.

It is a dealer tube. My original tube had broken off many years ago, and when I bought the cheap chrome one it wouldn't fit in the block... at all.
So I went to the dealership and bought this one.

Then, I rebuilt / overhauled the motor, and when I put it back together, the tube wasn't as hard to put in this time...

I have taken the dipstick tube out and grabbed a craftsman 1/4 drive socket that is usually tapered and put in the tube and a few raps on the socket with a hammer you can make it larger to give it a snug fit.

shouldn't a dealer (stock replacement) tube have a tab to bolt it to the engine?

They don't bolt in, press fit only

yes mine (i'm assuming it's stock) has a tab that matches up with a header bolt and it holds it in place..

when you had your block rebuilt they probably went .010 over on the dipsick... you need a .010 over tube!!!

Before 1981 the dipstick tube is on the left side of the engine and only presses in. Get a brand new tube and do NOT sand on it at all, clean the hole in the block, and press it in. Use a 1/4 wrench or crowsfoot to tap it down into the block. Should not need any sealant (GM never used any on them) but if it makes you feel better a very small amount on where it fits in the block. Forget using those chrome POS, only the plain steel GM ones.

I agree with that, I fought with trying to get mine to seal for the longest time until I realized that it would never seal properly as it was a chrome POS that the PO tried to put in there. It would leak oil like a sieve.

Just curious, what year is the engine? Stock or later model (85 and up)

Here's a question, then. Mine has two dipstick holes, one on each side of the engine. The one on the left is longer and has the dipstick in it, but the right one goes into the engine as well. It is blocked off, but I'm not sure why the engine even has it?

Most all of the new replacement 350 GM engines, like --Goodwrench/Target Master/Mexican engines had the dipstick tube provisions cast into the block for either side, this would allow GM to market these engines to a wide array of applications. Not just for trucks but passenger cars with a diiferent location for the tube.

My Lokar tube broke off and the small end is still in the block. I tried to use a easy out but it wouldn't pull out. Any suggestions?
