292 to 350 engine swap, I don't need a different crossmember do I?
I started breaking down my chassis today, it's a 68 GMC 4x4 SWB that I'm turning into a 70 Chevy 4x4 SWB. The current engine is getting yanked out but while I was pulling drive shafts and shocks and other stuff, I noticed the motor mounts on the 292 have stands and all kinds of stuff. Once I yank this engine, I can just buy 350 motor mounts and be done right or no? Also, with the 292 to 350 swap will the placement of the tranny and t/case stay in the same place?

i believe you are going to need a different one for a small block.
yes the transmission and transfer case will stay in the same place because the engine mounts in a different spot to keep the driveshafts the same.

I believe the 292 crossmember is unique.

Will I be able to use the crossmember that the 350 is sitting on right now? The truck is a C-10 2WD. There's no difference in the 2wd 350 crossmember when swapping to 4x4 chassis is there?

Do you still have the 292 4x4 cross member and mounts?

Re: 292 to 350 engine swap, I don't need a different crossmember do I?
The 292 4x4 cross member is offset to match the mounts on the motor. Top pic
The 250 & V8 4x4 cross member is straight across. Center Pic FYI 2wd trucks do not use a motor mount cross, the base of the mounting towers bolt directly to the front axle/cross member since it does not move. (See yellow arrow in bottom pic) |
