Need some opinions please - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well after several years of collecting parts I think that I am ready to tear my truck apart. What I plan on doing is a static drop of 4 and 6. Fitting some 22 for the rear and 18 for the front. Starting on rear end now. Striped down the rear and when I knocked the u bolts out of the trailing arms. They, meaning the arms split at the seams. Old tack welds let go. So I finished them off on the split and got both halves separated. Cleaned them up and welded them solid all the way around. They feel some much more solid and heavier now. My questions are, Should I go ahead and weld some reinforcement plates on there like the factory? Or is it good enough? Also wanting to put a rear sway bar on. Have a CCP rear bar, instructions mount it on bottom of control arms. Looks like it would be a good way to snag on something. Can it be mounted on top for more clearance? Any, if any difference? Putting my c notch in now so the installation of arms will be next. Thanks for any and all help..... Jay

Welding them up was reinforcement enough. Anything more would be added weight w/o much benefit so you're good to go.

I offer one recommendation..... do not do the 18/22 combo. The 2" difference between 18/20 combo's is very noticeable; 4" difference just won't look right.

I have seen our trucks with 18 and 22's. And it looks good, IMO. Granted these were highly~highly modified trucks. And now that I think about it they were always aired out. Hmmm. . . It is just a thought, and I do appreciate your opinion. Keep em coming.

Post up pics of an 18/22 combo. I've seen multiple 18/20 combos on here (even have a set); but I haven't seen the 18/22's done.

As long as the truck sits level, 18's and 22's aren't too bad. It has to sit level though. Any rake and it'll accentuate the difference.

What about the rear sway bar? On top of control arms, on bottom of control arms, or no bar at all. Survey Says!!!!

That's a good looking Burb, but that is not a good example.

Keep in mind that jay6891 is only running a 4/6 drop. Staggered wheel sizes look great on 67-72 when they are slammed. Running an 18/22 with a mild drop is going to make the front wheel look tiny.

Tony it doesn't matter how much it's lowered as it's not relevant to the conversation. Showing a pic of 61-66 truck/Burb etc does not give a visual of what the OP's truck will look like was the point I was making with my comment. That is an apples to oranges example.

Take a look at this truck I found on an eBay listing. I don't know how much it's lowered, but it will give a good visual of what Scoti referred to. This is an 18/20 combo with a static drop. Imagine how small the front tire/wheel will look if you made the rear wheel 2" bigger.

I'll be the first to point out that the rear tire in this set up isn't tall enough for the amount of drop, but it does give an idea of what we mean.

In the end, tire and wheel choice is all about personal preference. Despite that, I feel compelled to at least try to encourage others based on my experience and mistakes.

Those are 20/22's? Thought I read on the site that they were 18/22's. See that is why this board is so great...I was led wrong and wouldve been a bit po'ed if I bought the wrong combo. Not that that I would buy without alot of thought. Thanks for the info.

Rear sway bars are simple enough to add after it's driving if they're needed. Put it together & see if you think one is needed first....
