Ring & Pinion Question???

I have a Dana 60 with 4.56 gears and I want to go with 4.10s. My question is that can I just get a 4.10 ring & pinion set and have someone just put it in or is there something else involved? I was looking around and saw that 4.56 gears were for a 4 series carrier but the 4.10s were for a 3 series carrier. What does this mean? Thanks

What do you mean? He has two different colors for the low 60 (3.54-4.30 and 4.57-5.13) You win the auction, you get your choice of gears. If your carrier doesn't fit, (and if you have 4.57 it won't work on 4.10) you will need to get another.

One thing I dont understand about dana 60's is that everywhere I see parts for them mentioned they have 1965 as being the first date of manufacture. Yet the differential in my truck is date stamped 1962 as are the ring and pinion in the rear end I pulled that dif from. I dont know what the rear end came from as I got it from a pile in the junkyard. Does anyone know what year they started making Dana 60's ?

Actually just to be confusing, Richmond Gear offers an aftermarket 4.10 that apparently uses the 4.56 (series 4) carrier. The part # they give for it in the Summit Racing Catalog is RMG-6900521. The catalog says it has a thin ring gear (9.760" diameter) as opposed to the 9.875" of the normal 4.10 gear (Part # RMG-7900111).

I don't know anything about it other than what's listed in the catalog-- I've never seen or used one of these, and in general I favor genuine Dana gears over any aftermarket ones I've seen. But maybe using one of these aftermarket thin sets would save you the cost of switching carriers? If someone else has actually used them, they might be able to provide more info.

On the other hand, if you want to get normal 4.10's and just need a series 3 open carrier I've got a used one in good condition you can have for $5 plus shipping if you can't find one locally.

I run a Richmond "thick" gear in my Jimmy. It allows for 4.10 gears on the 12 bolt 3 series carrier. They have worked fine. I have never looked at Dana gearsets for sale to know they offered it, but it is a good solution IMO.
