The oil is in the exhaust port of the head? Just trying to clearify, not be a questioning donkey. I'd check compression on that cylinder too.

My mechanical brain has rotted over the past 10 years from not working on vehicles on a regular basis. I'd say it could be head gasket, rings, valve seal, or something else I'm forgetting. Note: I'm not saying it's a definate on any of them but they are the most lively culprits.

Re: oil from my header

It depends on what is the problem. I'm sure there are some others on here that can give better ideas and help troubleshoot it. You may even want to post this in the Engines forum, it may get more reads and info.

Re: oil from my header

do it smoke (white smoke) when you start it up and then stop? or just keep smoking out the tail pipe?

Re: oil from my header

Your piston rings and valve seals are most likely the culprits...

Re: oil from my header

So it is the front bolt that attaches the header to the cylinder head that is leaking oil?

These are blind holes so the only way that could happen is to have a cracked cylinder head. Somebody may have put a bolt in there that was too long and tightened the snot out of it trying to get it to seat the header.

You may be able to just put some ultra black or copper RTV on the bolt threads and stop the leak into the headers.

Re: oil from my header

no not the bolt hole. just the big hole where air flows through the header.

Re: oil from my header

The way I read it. He was talking about oil residue in the exhaust port. And with the way he says it smokes on start up and when its running it makes me think a mixture of valve seals and piston rings.

Re: oil from my header

A compression check will be the quickest and easiest test to do.

If all the cylinders are within about 10% of each other then a leak down test is next to see if you have other compression related issues like a damaged ring, piston or valve. If the compression and leak down tests are consistent then it is most likely just bad valve stem seals.

With the age of our trucks you are guaranteed to have old petrified damaged and non-functional valve stem oil seals but the guides themselves may be in decent shape. My truck smoked a little on start up before I changed out the valve stem seals and now it doesn't smoke at all.

Get a set of 16 silicone umbrella style valve stem seals that have springs around the top edge to hold them tight to the valve stem. While you are at it get a set of Z/28 replacement valve springs. They should cost you about $40 out the door for the seals and springs at your local machine shop.

It's not the easiest job to do with the heads on the truck but it can be done.
