How do you shave and narrow front and back bumpers

How do you shave and narrow front and back bumpers on a 68? How do you get rid of the bumper bolts to have a smooth clean look. I plan on buying new chrome bumpers

Don't bother buying chrome bumpers if you are going to narrow them. You will just have to spend more $$$ getting them re chromed after you are done narrowing them. I have never narrowed the bumpers on a 67-72, but I did narrow them on a 79 Malibu to eliminate the stupid rubber/ plastic fill panels. I just cut them off where the 90 degree bend started, took another 2" off each end of the center section, then welded the ends back on. I sand blasted the chrome til it was rough, then had the bumpers painted body color.

if you want a chromed final product i suggest b4 doing anything find out how many hundreds the chome guy wants to chrome a bumper assy. it may cause you to rethink the project

the mods you want to do are just a matter of cutting welding and filling

for the bumper bolts, weld up the holes, and then weld bolts to the back side of the bumper like studs.

Re: How do you shave and narrow front and back bumpers

on bumper bolts...
they are carrage style bolts(rounded head with a square section beneath the rounded head, then the shaft with threads for the bolt)
Cut the rounded heads off the bumper bolts...
mount headless bolts to bumper brackets...
place bumper over the headless bolts...
weld bumper to bolt...
grind until smooth...
send out to chrome shop

on narrow bumpers... Two Guys Garage on SPEED channel just had an example

Post #2 describes the "proper" way to shave a bumper.I've heard (no personal experience)that chrome shops may not be willing to chrome a bumper that doesn't have the washers as they tend to crack.May be worth talking to the shop you plan on using beforehand and get their opinion.
Post #7 makes a good point too,Martinsr really knows his stuff,so if he says so then it's so.

Re: How do you shave and narrow front and back bumpers

Thanks guys for the helpful info. So for the rear bumper to hug the body a little more I was thinking maybe cutting the brackets a 1/2 inch or more and welding them back together.
