Question NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

This question has probaly been on here before ... but here goes again. Does anybody know of an AFFORDABLE transfer case parking brake kit that will work on an NP205? Mine has the slip yoke output to the driveshaft.

Need to create something or if it can be found 'cheap', buy it.

Thanks for your help.

Re: NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

I've seen a kit out there, but it wasn't cheap. Check the rockcrawling sites for ideas... What's up with your rear brakes?

Question Re: NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

The rear brakes are a disk conversion. I think I put 76-79 front calipers on there, so they don't have any parking function.

I would think by this time one of the more creative types on our site would have engineered a transfer case disk setup by now?

I'll wait for more responses.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

Need one for the same reason, only yoke setup. I think the yoke setup would be easier than the slip setup.

Because it would be a constant drain on the battery? That and the fact that the solenoids are not designed for continuous use....they are supposed to be "momentary"

Thumbs up Re: NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

I considered the 'line lock' idea as an option but not for the heavy 'working' truck sector. I use my truck to go out in the woods and cut firewood, home repair supplies, loads of mulch, etc.. So when it is parked on a steep incline out in the woods for hours, I need to know that I have a definite mechanical lockup on the drivetrain and the weight of the truck and load is not on the transmission.

I'll hang in there and wait to see who else responds with more ideas.

Have a call into High Angle and will see what they say. The fine print on their kit says that you have to buy their yoke also. I am really not interested in having to cut the driveshaft again and have the entire rotating assembly balanced AGAIN. Been there - Done that, TWICE already with the 700R4 install and moving the engine forward. Everything seems to be working very smooth right now, even at high speeds, no vibrations.

Thanks ... lets keep looking for the answer please.
Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all members of this site!! We're real lucky to have this site for our enjoyment and needs. I'm thankful for it.

Don't know about this company; but found it some time back while looking for a transfer case brake.

Re: NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

A line-lock is not intended as a parking brake. It`s a recovery feature that locks the wheels so the driver can be outside rigging and winching while the truck holds with all fours, hydraulically (full brakes). You don`t walk away from a line-locked truck.
Heavy one tons used a driveshaft brake.Look under some in junkyard and see what you can find.Depending on condition you may not save much, though.Service parts may be a tough find, too.

That's what I was going to suggest. Lots of trucks from about P30s (say, bread truck chassis, Snap-On trucks, etc) on up had driveline brakes. I have a friend who put an Allison AT540 in his '72 4X4. It came out of a school bus and he used the driveline brake that came with it. I asked him how it all worked and he said "awesome."

School bus chassis were all four-wheel disc when I was working on them, back in the '80s. The driveline brakes worked excellent. They had an overcentering handle (sort of worked like a Vise-Grip) in the cab to set them with, but you could easily fab a cable to make it hook up to the foot pedal E-brake in our trucks.

Couldnt you order trucks with a PTO parking brake? not sure if it will work for your setup... just another idea.

Re: NP205 Transfer Case Parking Brake?

you can get mechanical line locks and they are designed to be used as a parking brake.

jess @ highangle is going to be your best bet out side of the eldo caliper ebrake or just getting a modern disc brake axle.
