first crew cab

hay guys im new hear iv got a 72 3/4 ton 4x4 but im wanting to build a bagged crew cab next any sugestions like what fram i could use im lookn at use a 5.9 cummins as the power plant any help will be really helpfull

What are you going to use for a crew cab? One of the ones converted back in the day and sold through the GM dealers, or are you looking to fab one up?

I would use a 3/4 or one ton frame and the njust lengthen it. If you look at the frames of a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton there is significant difference under the cab area on how thick the rails are. Then i would brace it of course. 5.9 cummins is a great idea for a powerplant. Dieselwrencher swears by those things. Also there was a member on here up in oregon who had a crewcab for sale a while back, with suicide doors if i remember correctly.

Lots of work and not sure I would want to go back down that road. I have a decent crew cab truck here in Vacaville you could check out. There are a couple of crew cab lurking on the board here that look really good.

1/2 ton and 3/4 ton frames are pretty much the same. I would start with a one ton.

I would agree as my truck is on a 79 1 ton frame and the frame is huge.

There is siginificant difference between 1/2 and 3/4 ton frames. Yes i would recommend a 1 ton frame but top to bottom on a 1/2 ton frame under the cab is about 6 inches and on a 3/4ton frame its about 8 inches and they are usually a little thicker.

I like the mirror set up on that truck.. I been wrestling with what to do for quite some time. I welded up all the holes in my doors when it was painted. I was thinking of taking newer flip up dodge mirrors and using the corner piece when you install one piece windows to mount them on.. BUT, i have yet to put my doors together because I had not decided to go that route for sure. (one of those things I wish I would have figured out before paint) However, since I have all the parts to rebuild my window glass with all new rubber and felt and I like the looks of this....... Maybe I found my answer!

No diference in 1/2 T and 3/4T frame other than some bracing and suspension.....Now the difference between a those two and a 1 T frame is pretty significant.

i was thinkn about using a four door frame like some of you had said. i dont have a problem fabin up the cab but were would i cut the cabs im wanting to try and run pillerless doors iv got some ideas on that. like suicide rear doors and iv'e heard that there are diffrences in chevy and gmc frames is that true?

Exactly. Unless the 3/4 ton in question is a longhorn then the 3/4 and 1/2 ton frames are the same. Some added braces, and lower rear cab mounts.
A longhorn is built on a one ton frame, so it falls under the one ton specs, with a taller, and thicker metal used for the frame rails.

All this is 67 - 72 specific... anything built after that I can not comment on.

No, it's not true. Frames will differ in the rear if they have coil springs or leaf springs, but Chevy and GMC could have either suspension.
