Bed Liner Coatings

Have any of you guys use any Roll in Bed Liners? Off the Shelf kinda stuff..... Hippo Liner, Herculiner, etc. Would like to hear of any experience you guys may have with any of this.

This has been discussed many times. I will answer according to what I have seen in the numerous topics before to help you out pretty quick.

THE BEST: Line-X

The Best do-it-yourself: Raptor, SEM, Grizzly Grip, and then there is one other type on here that others have used that I have heard good stuff about.

I have used SEM, Herculiner, Grizzly Grip and that really cheap stuff at Wal-Mart on jeeps and trucks in the past.

So far, SEM is the best I have personally used. It can be tinted to match the color of your vehicle paint. It isn't a real sandpaper type finish like Line-x is, but I wanted one more like Rhino Liner as I sprayed it inside my daily driver Jeep Rubicon tub so I wouldn't rip skin off.

Grizzly Grip is also very good. It comes out more like Line-X, more of a rough grit to it. I sprayed it in my old jeep tub, and I never had a scratch or chip in it. It also comes in different colors pre mixed which is good if you don't need a 100% color match. I liked it a lot as well.

Herculiner is ok at best, but it can chip and peel easily if not prepped right, but still will after good prep.

The Wal Mart stuff is junk, do not waste time on this. Maybe some on here like it, but to me its just a non-skid coating type paint, flakes, chips, and scratches with a fingernail.

I try to spray mine on everytime. I just walk into harbor freight and either get a drywall splatter gun, or a abrasive blasting gun for cheap and spray. Prep work is key.

heres a couple I did with Al's Liner. It can be rolled in but you do get better results by spraying it in.

ive used the walmart brand twice (96 z71 and 91k1500) yes it not as good as the 1/4" stuff but if your just hauling logs etc it works fine.... if your throwing engine blocks in the back then its gonna scratch it up.... but who cares, just throw some more on top........
just like a paint job.....its all about prep...... i scuff my whole bed, then wipe down with cleaner (stuff used before laying paint down) removes dirt,grease etc.... then brush on the tight spots and roll the rest with skinny/wide paint rollers..... let it dry for a couple days and have fun...

i will likely use al's liner products on all future body off resto's.....good rust/soundproofing for floorboards (top and bottom side), frames, chassis components, hitch, etc. powdercoating doesn't last more than a couple years when subjected to regular winter driving. first off for me will be an 87 ram 50 (mitsubishi pickup) that just doesn't take well to salt spray (rusts like a son of a gun). i may do tinted liner to match the paint....or paint the body with the liner and use multiple coats of black liner in the bed, chassis, etc to differentiate. it's handy having a little truck that can haul the snow blower, snowmobile, haul a small trailer etc when i don't need my 72 burb (or want to keep it out of the salt spray).

I have used Scorpion Brand for the last couple years and have found it to be the best!
It wont turn to flat black, like the others after a year

I could be wrong but I believe they are the ones who developed Al"s Liner

I just went through this as well; I was a bit put off about the price of some of these products, as well as concerns about the long term durability (flaking, discoloring, etc).

In the end, I handed my daughter a can of black Rustoleum and a paint brush and told her to "go to town".

For about $6.78 I have a nice, black pickup box. I figure if it chips or flakes I can just redo that area.

I should be able to repaint my entire box 50 times (or so) for what I would've paid for the aftermarket liners.

you are correct, Al's liner is from what I understand the same commercial/industrial grade liner as scorpion, Just Al's liner has been put into kits so the DIY's like guys on this board can do it for themselves without spending all the installation cost.
